Sonic Frontiers pre-amps
KeisNot sure if I could handle the Calypso if it's a remote only job.It may be that my Kora Eclipse burries the SF in sound quality but I miss having front panel controls.Going by alll th reviews I have a pre that once listed for over $5K though i...
Krell KAV 300i. Solution to keep the RCA caps on ?
I also do not like the push buttons on Krell gear. For the price it is amzingly shabby in terms of fit and finish. But I am sure that you can find somebody to put new inputs on and may improve sound as well as your sense of "solidity" and well being...
Review: B&W B&W 603 s3 Speaker
Sold B&W for 6 years. While I agree with your point about diminishing returns I heard the 600 series day in and out and they are excellent. But ifyoi diregard the fancy outtter looks of 800 series the inrert cabinets made quiytes a difference.Li...
Help w/ my new large room
Your budget limits things. You maybe better looking for a good sub first and going with it until your budget permits a bigger speaker.A room filling big speaker with deep base would be the PSB Gold's (though there are better mids out ther it's boig...
DIY LP cleaning IKEA find
Cool idea.I use LAST with my VPI 16.5 but with the POwer Cleaner they make it would be better to use what you have mentioned.Just an extra tip Mike the head tech at VPI told me the home brew he had heard of and what I havce gotten good result from...
$800 Cartridge Shootout and Upgrade Path
Mike the head tech at VPI is Ga Ga about the Sumiko Black Bird.I have a good discount on Grados and he also thinks Grado Master is better than Sonnata and worth the Price. At Red Hat they said that the Shelter 901 kicks ass at the $1500 price point...

Speakers with great high and mid range
I second the Revels though I don't own them.I am a midrange guy and use tubes to that end and horns to do the job.If ou could find a used pair of small Odeons like I have either the Model 17's or double 6's which even though they list at $2800 and...
The best CD Player for the money
I can't believe timeless as this question is that this thread goes back to 12-28-00.Amazing.At some point there will be some technology that replaces CD and digital the way LP and analogue got replaced.Of course those in the know know they were ne...
Is there a better sub than the Aerial SW12?
June Stereophile has the Velodyne DD in it where reviewer say's first "super sub" (here the big 18" flagship variant) that lives up to it's hype and that on screen set up (you could bring a TV in just to set it up combined with electronic set up i...
EL34 tube recommendations
You might pay a bit more going to retalier butwon't have towrroy about time on tubes or whether or not it's a fake by calling Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio. He might have some old new stock like french Mazda or something other than Telefunken or Mull...
Is a Krell KAV 250a balanced?
I worked at a dealership and sold the gear for 4 years.I don't think they ever made a product that was't true balanced through and though.A lot of folks don't know the difference and when they see XLR outputs on a Pre-amp or CD player or inputs on...
Cables with VPI Scout
Why not stick with the VPI brand? In your mind you are getting what they think is a "piece" or set sound that takes the one more manufacturers design philosophy so you can can have catridge to head amp and evaluate what you have withoutb thinking s...
Grado Sonata 1.5mV, 4.5mV, and 0.5mV for VPI
Spoke with John Grado before I set up my Aries with a .5 Sonata. He say's if my phono could handle it (and I am sure yours can) you simply get fewer winds of coil to distort the sound. So .5 is what they say.I spoke more recently with Mike who is he...
