Universal disc players as CD players.
In my experience, dedicated CD players have superior sound with CDs than multi-format players.  I've owned the Oppo 205, the Esoteric X05 and some others, but I have never liked the sound of CDs as much as I liked the sound of the Naim players or ...
Toslink cable that isn't prone to jitter, possible?
I don’t think that’s jitter. Sounds like a dirty or worn laser lens or a faulty cable or connection. Easiest way to tell - disconnect the dac and see if this happens when you use the CD player alone. If it’s the laser, it will do the same thing. I...
Toslink cable that isn't prone to jitter, possible?
I'm not 100% sure of this, but I don't think you can hear jitter per-se.  You may hear a diminution in sound quality due to excessive jitter, but I have a feeling you are hearing something else and calling it jitter.  Can you describe the sound?
Power regenerator vs conditioner
@craig - I agree with you in that you would think regenerated "perfect" AC would be the better choice, yet so many audiophiles seem to go with the passive conditioners and I'm not sure why.  I myself have an Audience conditioner, which I like very...
Are warm or colored speakers disrespectful of musicians/producer/engineers?
As someone who spent many years working in recording studios, I can tell you that, in my experience at least, the final mixes of most music are a series of compromises made by the engineers to account for the many different acoustic environments t...
What is the most analytical sounding amplifier that you have heard?
I think the term "analytical" when used by audiophiles is generally a negative term used to describe any part of the audio chain lacking in body or warmth.  In the context of this thread, I think "accurate" would be the better term.  Then again, i...
Favorite Platform for Linn LP12
Not much love for Linn around here.  When I had my Linn, I found it was amazingly sensitive to the platform it sat on.  I was using a Target wallshelf and the installer was amazed at the improvement in sound using a Neuance platform as opposed to ...
Coupling/Decoupling Electronics
I agree with the above posters about draining vibrations and all, but always keep in mind that ultimately you may prefer the sound of the component sitting on it's own feet.  In some cases, putting footers or platforms under the component may hard...
Corpse Cable - Opinions Please
Boy - everybody is Henny Youngman.
Naim CD5 XS player vs 5si player
First, I would not downsize from the CDS3 as I'm sure you would be disappointed with virtually anything on the market compared to what you have.  That said, I auditioned the original CD5s and ended up with the 5x, which are substantially similar t...
Would you Upgrade?
IMO, if you are buying an expensive piece of equipment from a local dealer, you should be able to get a home demo.  It is the only way for you to know.  Whether the speaker is "better" or not will depend to a very large degree on how it interfaces...
Visual Confirmation Bias
Humans are not laboratory instruments.  We do not hear or see like microphones and cameras.  Electrical and/or mechanical impulses are routed into the brain, which is a veritable fun house of biases, pre-conceptions and distortions.  That's why an...
The problem with the speaker industry
Dear Kenjit - I disagree with your premise that the goal of a high-end speaker is to reproduce the input signal perfectly. I am not in any way trying to be snarky or cynical, but IMO, the goal of a high-end speaker is to SELL. No sane person is go...
Dedicated Harbeth P3 Thread
I think the bass on the P3s is surprisingly better than you might think, especially when paired with the Purist Poseidon speaker cables. Very full and balanced, even with pop music. I listen to James Taylor, Eryica Badu, Shelby Lynn, Ricki Lee Jon...
Dedicated Harbeth P3 Thread
I think Harbeths are probably most touted for their abilities with vocals and acoustic music.  As with any small speaker, playing large-scale classical works are not really their forte, unless you're listening at background levels.  But for piano,...
