UP-GRADING FROM YAMAHA 5.1
I would say the Yamaha would set you back, I tried the same with an Onkyo reciever a while back, going even to a Rotel Pro was a huge step, now I have tube pre and the Rotel for movies. 
What am I missing?

Cable TV Picture Stinks
Is this an issue with both analog and digital channels? Some of my locals and the bottom 100 channels are not digital and some really really suck and its just the way it is, bit the digital feeds look great, is this any way what you experience? 
How big should center spkr be to set to "large"?
I have a center that specs down into the 30hz range and it is a stretch but I do like it better at 60hz than at 80hz, very few will actually spec at full range, even fewer can honestly acheive it.

Sure some of our systems and mine are not set-up ideal, we have small houses wives and family considerations but we also have a love for music and trying to get equipment that represents it best, if some can do better please try, but for those of ... 
Planar speaker question
I feel that Planar's and Maggies are not a ton of money because there are not expensive cabinet considerations, no special amp is needed as long as it has alot of juice 200w plus is ideal IMO. Eminent Technology LFTVIIIA is a great speaker with a ... 
Outdoor speaker recommendations
I have JBL outdoor speakers wich come with mounting brackets and like them alot...why go crazy? Everything sounds good when out and hanging with friends IMO The JBL's I think are $200 per pair. 
Crossover Help
Rotel would work, it is adjustable to 150hz and very versital, each speaker not only has cross-over but also bass and treble adjustments. 
Music out there with good bass
Classical Telarc disc's are known for great bass I have maybe five and like them all.
