Is bass the most important frequency band?
@pcrhkr,"Bass that is wrong can ruin music."You mean the 2009 Beatles stereo remasters?"So if done properly Bass is Awesome."Yes, bass can be both exciting or extremely relaxing, but its first got to be there.
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
@mijostyn,A rare moment of almost total agreement indeed. Especially considering the various vested interests at play. A few cartridge vendors may be heard mumbling at the back, but mostly everyone else is in accord.I'd also add that the turntab...
Blind Test: mp3 vs. 24bit
Ok, done the test on headphones and in all 3 cases (Black Sabbath, Patricia Barber, Anne Akiko Meyer/Vivaldi) I marginally preferred sample a over sample b.Let's hope the findings are better than a 50/50 or 60/40 result.Way better.
Blind Test: mp3 vs. 24bit
"So far, the results are surprising"I’m not surprised. Although many people apparently find 128kps indistinguishable from CD, for me once I get past 192kbps it becomes extremely difficult to tell any difference. Not to say it also defeats the purpo...
Books!
My favourites include: Sound Bites: 50 years of Hi-Fi News by Ken Kessler Ken’s travelogue never fails to captivate each time I return to it. A Pair of Wharfedales: The Story of Gilbert Briggs and His Loudspeakers by David BriggsA great historical...
The extinction of human interaction takes yet another step forward...
We are mammals, not cyborgs, and no amount of computer hardware can change that salient fact. Nor should it ever try to for the consequences would be dire. Having said that, there's no reason why software based online Hi-Fi shows can't co-exist a...
You own a store, you sell 2 brands, which?
If this was the UK in the 1980s it should have been Sony and Technics but it had to be Linn and Naim because it was hopeless to blow against the wind.Today it would be NAD and Dali.Virtually all budgets and requirements could be catered to and it ...
If there’s an audiophile exit ramp, this ain’t it…
@sumaato,My off-ramp was to get off where I began! The story ended where it began.Obviously, my audio taste, both aurally and aesthetically was formed 52 years ago These are all comments that strike a resonance with me too.One evening some 40 odd y...
What comes after Harbeth 30.1s?
@arafiq, Until then, I will continue to enjoy the 30.1s.M30.1s for a second system? A wise decision. You should count yourself fortunate; my current second system features a pair of plastic egg shaped Sony speakers!
What comes after Harbeth 30.1s?
Any of the M40s are better than any of the M30s/SLH5s/C7s etc. It’s a timeless design that did very very little wrong to begin with. The reason why the BBC designed/influenced speakers (Falcon, Graham, Harbeth, PMC, Spendor, etc) remain in productio...
Bad recordings and high end audio
@gumbedamit,"Frogman: I respectfully disagree with your statement of a bad recordings sounding better on a good system vs, a bad system. Good/Great systems reveal just how poorly a a recording was created or how well. Garbage In. Garbage out. Less...
If there’s an audiophile exit ramp, this ain’t it…
@redwoodaudio,I just want to enjoy the music.I think we all do.Unfortunately we seem to be infected by a virus for which there is no known cure.Just when and where this infection occured is not known but complete recovery is virtually unheard of.I...
Thoughts on moving from a 1200G to Sota Saphire or above
@lewm,"The audio establishment sold us the idea that headshells were inherently unstable mounted at the end of an arm wand, so now we’ve got a lot of expensive tonearms with fixed headshells. Around the same time they sold us the idea that bass an...
Which Harbeths?
From what I’ve heard of either I’d say they’re quite different. The Totems were quite agile and dynamic, but the Harbeths seemed better balanced.I also found the Totems a bit sharp up top too, but this was about 10 years ago, the Forests I think, ...
Is bass the most important frequency band?
Agreed, the so called presence (4-6kHz) and brilliance (6-8kHz) bands are the most important. However, it’s the bass band that usually gives systems the most problems. It’s also the bass band where most of the measurable distortion is to be found -...
