Perfect Pop Songs
@shtinkydog  "since we're doing sub-genres, here are my goth-pop picks: inbetween days - the cure"   That's the great thing about Pop, it's a genre all by itself that doesn't care about sub-genres. I remember hearing Love Cats earlier today i...
Tannoy anyone? Cheviot Legacy vs. Stirling GR
Although I'm using Tannoy Berkeley's I'd agree with the previous advice about getting them at the correct height, ie the tweeter at or near ear height. I've seen photographs of when Tannoys were used at the Abbey Road studios. They had them place...
Perfect Pop Songs
@dredison  Great suggestions. All except the Del Amitri were new to me.   Nice standout lyric in the XTC track - "But he made too many enemies Of the people who would keep us on our knees." The Rheostatics was probably my favourite upon fi...
Sunday tributes for Stephen Sondheim
The world will always be grateful to Stephen Sondheim. He was blessed to be so admired by so many. That collaboration with Leonard Bernstein on West Side Story should more than guarantee him an artistic immortality.
How do you know when a stereo sounds good?
@elliottbnewcombjr , "when the music becomes so INVOLVING you forget about the equipment, get lost is the experience"   The same for me. It's a similar experience as watching an involving film or reading a gripping novel. All of which require...
Finally Learned: Subs serve much larger role than adding more low bass
Bass is ... just so nice. Bass depth before bass volume. Anytime.
Your Favorite Christmas Song-One only Please-
Beat Mariah Carey?  That's absurdly easy. Just pick one?  Hmm...not so easy. Might take some time soul searching and in-depth analysis.   On the other hand, how about the first one that to comes to mind?
Perfect Pop Songs
Like Captain Renault, I'm shocked, simply shocked. How could I have forgot to mention perhaps the most perfect pop record ever cut? If there's anything wrong with this then it's beyond my comprehension. Shelley Fabares - Johnny Angel US no 1 19...
Damaged Driver
Vacuum cleaner on lowest power. Gently, carefully. Dust caps are even seen by some as unnecessary. My Tannoys have been modified by Lockwood Audio and no longer have any dust caps and I always leave the grilles on.
Adding a “safe haven” forum for discussion of tweaks?
@mahgister "I discovered why i was a bad musician , i lived all my life more used to perceive rythm and harmony than melody, with not much melodical memory but an increase power to perceive forms and dynamical shapes linked to block of chords mo...
Headphones vs full range speakers
Headphones with their vastly superior transient response are more lifelike, but I prefer speakers. At least until I can find a pair of headphones that will let me forget I'm wearing them.
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
"Ya ain't gonna learn what ya don't wanna know" This line reminded me of 2 different sets of Dylan lyrics illustrating 2 different kinds of knowledge.   "Your sister sees the future Like your mama and yourself You've never learned to read or ...
New Order fans?
@dvddesigner , 24 Hour Party People might be the best thing Steve Coogan has done. Ok, his Stan Laurel was pretty good too! Anyway, the late Tony Wilson is still much missed. Perhaps he was the nearest thing we had to a maverick British version...
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
@atmasphere , "The cost of the cartridge has almost nothing to do with it. This all comes from the arm and how well the cartridge compliance and weight works to allow for the mechanical resonance to fall into the right frequency."   Well said. ...
New Order fans?
@larsman, I caught their one-off show online a short while back. I began watching tentatively and was surprised to find myself soon gripped and immersed in the music. What could easily have been an embarrassment ended up being a spectacular. R...
