Wilson Sophia II vs. Thiel CS3.7
Even though the cost to amplify and the initial cost would add up with the Thiels. That, unfortunately, was the thought I had leaving the store. Still, those speakers (either 2.4 or 3.6) made it seem like a good idea to change everything, again.Pro...
Wilson Sophia II vs. Thiel CS3.7
I heard these speakers this morning--5/17--and had my socks knocked off. The definition, the clarity is incredible at all volume levels. Deep, tight bass. Crisp treble. A natural, not overly pronounced midrange. It was truly amazing how well all t...
Cary Six Pac vs. sli-80
I own an SLI-80 Signature and have nothing but praise for it. As Cruz123 points out, the flexibility of this amp is impressive. Headphones. Sub out. On the fly shifting. The output and signal path tubes are fun to roll and experimentation really p...
'they blew'em off the stage'
This was long ago, when Bon Scott was alive, ACDC opened for Ted Nugent at an outdoor concert in Rockford, IL, and they just burned the place down. Just a great bit of showmanship with a killing beat that no one could have surpassed. And they made...

How can I improve my system
Nothing wrong with your set up, but those modest 10K Thiels are pretty good speakers. Just my .02.
Do you pull A/C plugs during thunder storms?
Yes. It's easy, and the potential catastrophic damage that you can avoid makes it a no brainer. I've lost two trees to lightening strikes. They were beautiful ashes. Wish I had them back.
How do you ship large items? Help
Kennyt: Point taken. Tiered shipping rates either works for or against the buyer, depending. I just think Bathory127 should find out on which tier he lands before commiting, which I'm sure he'll do. With diesel above $4.00 a gallon, it isn't going...
How do you ship large items? Help
Most pallets aren't sixty inches. They will have to be custom built. Don't let them stand the speakers upright on standard pallets--that means a strap over the top. This endeavor will be expensive like you cannot believe. I bought a pair of Altecs...

Tung-Sol, 6550, old vs new
I've used the reissue (originals are out of my price league) Tung-Sol 6550s, and I thought they were a well balanced tube, maybe just a little lacking at the bottom end. Not exceptional, but not a tube I could say was bad. Then I bought a quad of ...
Suggestions For Classical & Symphonic CDs
Dvorak, Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op 95, From the New World. EMI, The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch. A good performance. Covers most of the mentioned bases. Always a winner. The Reference Recording of Copland is outstan...

Question on biasing an amplifier
I plug in my multimeter while the amp is on. It's safe. If your multimeter has a loose lead, however, you'll get a snap-crackle-pop through your speakers. That will definitely shake you up, but it won't hurt you.
Need to turn volume all the way up with cartridge
Gain sounds okay, Zenieth, but loading seems off. Did the manufacturer of the cartridge suggest 47k? Try the the KAB website. They have lots of helpful advice and a preamp calculator. Plug in some numbers. The Cartridge Database is a good info sou...
