Gave up my SET----looking for moderate to higher power replacement options @charles1dad As @twoleftears suggests, my bet is on the AGD amplifiers as the most SET sounding class D design (GAN-based). I'd love to hear them. They certainly want to convince us that they care about SET musical characteristics with the desig...
Gave up my SET----looking for moderate to higher power replacement options @lcherepkai 1. I've also heard that about the Benchmarks. My impression is that they are not capable of handling low impedance loads, and (perhaps surprisingly) it seems this becomes more of an issue if you're running them as monoblocks. If you're...
Gave up my SET----looking for moderate to higher power replacement options @atmasphere I appreciate your explaination and the educational post Ralph, but I will note that some listeners do find substantial differences between 2nd vs 3rd harmonic dominant designs (e.g., see the "Harmonic Distortion and Sound" section of t...
Gave up my SET----looking for moderate to higher power replacement options Just out of curiosity, I went over to usam and looked at the amps for sale between $2000 & $3000. Not that I think they’re going to sound like a SET, but three I’d be interested in trying if I were in your situation were the Ayre V-X5e (200W),...
Gave up my SET----looking for moderate to higher power replacement options Lots of quality recommendations and educational posts in here. Good luck with the search. I was going to tell you about my efforts in the same regard, but I went from 8W 300b SET monos to a 25W First Watt PP. Moving from 45W to 100W seems like a t...
Whats on your turntable tonight? @tomic601 Thanks Jim! I've got all the parts, just can't set anything up due to house selling and the packing that will have to happen once someone pulls the trigger to buy. Unfortunately will just be on computer speakers and eventually a UE boom...
Whats on your turntable tonight? @tomic601 At the end of my last semester as a professor we transitioned to online because of covid and I'd just post lectures for them to view at their leisure and then sit around on zoom during class time in case anyone had questions. Teaching 10...
Best sounding resistors @jaytor Did you see partsconnexion has a sale on Audio Note Tantalum resistors? I haven't heard them, but I see a lot of manufacturers advertising their use.I haven't done good listening tests, but I chose naked z foil throughout the signal path o...

Upgrading from Thiel 2.7 to Sonus Faber or Focal??? Sounds like you'll just have to get the SFs and keep the Thiels.
Can I use my Allnic L3000 preamp with headphone amp? Just start with the volume all the way down and adjust up. That's 0v, so it can't hurt anything.
Pass XP-25 mods I'd ask over at: https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pass-labs/A great, active, very knowledgeable community. They'll likely have more opinions than this crowd.
DAC Choices - $5,000 to $7,000 In case anyone wants to read some user impressions: https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/sw1x-audio-design-dac-ii-absolute-top-tier-ref-nos-dac
Finally Settled on a Preamp—Don Sachs Model 2 Custom Linestage I liked a pair of Sylvania vt-231 brown bases in mine, and my favorite were rca vt-231 Grey glasses. Agreed that they produce a lot more 3-dimensionality than the stock tubes.
DAC Choices - $5,000 to $7,000 For people still shopping, another contender seems to be the Sw1x dacs. R2R with tube output stages. I've seen nothing but praise. I think that's the next one I'll try (either the III or IV). |
