Best recording Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 4
If you listen to the 78's of rachmaninoff playing on a victrola, you will understand. His lucid, liquid, free genius surrounds and penetrates. He really is one that doesn't transfer well to digital.
What is a good intro to "Mahler"?
I can't believe noone mentioned the Mengelberg recordings!!!??? There are in my book, 2 illuminative Mahler interpreters (owners). Mengelberg- who championed Mahler's music, and Bruno Walter who was Mahler's assistant at the Vienna Phil. If you li...
Mozart,Haydn,Beethoven String Quartets......
they are interesting... they are one of the uncategorizable "authentic" quartets, due the inventiveness and instinctive playing of Hobart. Will gve them a relisten. I recall thinking that Hobart kind of outshined the rest of the group....
recommended versions of Beethoven symphonies?
Willem Mengelberg with Concertgebouw. His performances IMHO really capture the spirit of Beethoven... spontaniety, a sense of making it up as we go, weight, elegance, humanity, and divinity. If there were any recordings with Bruno Walter and Vienn...
Jolida JD100. How good is it?
You will not regret it. I have the modded version from parts connexion. Extremely musical, warm, detailed, but not analytical or clinical. I hear the modded version improves the bass, but I haven't heard the unmodded player. All I can say,is that ...
Bruckner 9th...
For the 9th, it is no contest. FURTWANGLER! He captures the mysticism and monumental spiritual development inherent in the piece. You want to talk about sound? Listen to the magical sound Furtwangler elicits from the Berlin Phil.
Bohuslav Martinu
Martinu is such an interesting composer, so cool. Check out the Martinu Madrigals for violin and viola performed by Joseph and Lillian Fuchs. On Decca, only on LP. A great piece and a great performance by the piece's dedicatees.
Mozart,Haydn,Beethoven String Quartets......
To be completely honest, I can't think of any truly great performances on digital. I can think of great performances transfered to cd that sound great:Hungarian S.Q.- their complete Beethoven is the best studio recorded set I know of. No compromis...
Bach Brandenberg Concertos CD Recommendation
Andante Label has a collection of the Brandenburg Concertos conducted by the likes of Cortot, Mengelberg, Furtwangler, Weingartner... The Cortot Bach is wonderful. So is the Mengelberg. On CD. All wonderful artists, none with "authentic" pretenses...
Most achingly-beautiful music
The cavatina from Beethoven's late string quartet opus 130 perfomed by Berlin phil with Furtwangler. Or performed by the Hungarian String Quartet.
Mozart Piano Concerto 21.
Artur Schnabel, London Sym. Orch, sargent cond.masterful, artful playing.

Audiogon "RECORDINGS TO DIE FOR" list
The top 5 that I could listen to for ETERNITY... Hmmmm..Ok, without trying to evenly distribute to the differing styles, based purely on ecstatic listening pleasure:1. Bach St. Matthew Passion, Concertgebouw Orch conducted by Willem Mengelberg "li...
