Tubes vs. solid state.
Is the romance over? I don't think so. Best to check out some system other then your own, say at a dealer that has a good stock of tubes and SS. I have both, and I always go back to tubes, especially if the source is analogue. I have never found S...
Are you ever satisfied?
Satisfaction is not something in the human condition.
Scoutmaster vs. Basis 1400
Stick with the Basis, unless you can get all the VPI add on's.
Diffusion versus absorption behind speakers?
TubeTraps and ASC offer a free evulation of your room if you send them pictures and a diagram. I've use both as a starting point and it worked well, but as others have stated, it is a trial and error process.
Best TT plinth material, cost no object
Next to the sidewalk, best it go into an adjacent room. One of the neglected issues related to TT's is the acoustic energy the is flying around the listening room. It always is impacting the arm and cartridge, no matter what the plinth material is...
Purchasing a Technics SP-10MKIIA what to watch for
take a cartridge, mount it and play 33 and 35 speeds. A strobe would also be a handy test.
Rack/component fans?
Cooling fans for laptops can be run from usb power strips that get there power from an AC wall wart. Meritline sells one for $8 that can handle seven usb plugs and it includes the AC power adapter. The also have one $25 but the $8 one will do the ...
VPI Scout - Cartridge Issues
I've used the penny solution before and it does work. Yes, Harry does charge $15 for a penny. This man has no shame. Perhaps he should provide it free, good will is priceless.
Speakers for long, tall, bare room in NYC
As for a shop, try Stereo Exchange on lower Broadway. Most of the times they are friendly, sometimes not. However they do often give speakers on loan, which is the only way you are going to me able to tell if they work in your room. Start with mon...
Rack/component fans?
Think cabinet, not rack. Best that you isolate the components from the acoustic energy in the room, racks do not do that. I've tried racks, many different kinds but found the cabinet works best, and yes, proper ventilation is a must. The latter is...
Denon or Marantz? Home theater beginner.
onkyo. sound quality is equal or better then denon/marantz plus onkyo service is much, much better.
what cartridge?
Take all of the pain out of your life, get a Shure 97. I know, it is too cheap to really provide good sound. That is until you actually hear it. I have, and it is the best value in the under $500 category. I have many cartridges, including $2K one...
New House: Audio room/Office
Think about building an acoustical isolated closet to put the equipment in, especially if a turntable is in the picture.
I need your advice on system for a non-audiophile
Seeing is believing. Best you see/hear the room, existing system before making a recommendation. The statement of 'clear' leads me to think the issue is just not the equipment.
T.H.E. Show 2010
Steal's at $12K. Give me a break.
