Coincident Linestage vs CJ CT5 or Allnic L-3000
Wilsynet, I had the same thing as you are describing with the mute switch. I traded some e-mails with Israel. This can happen if an XLR IC is not wired accordinging to standard, but in my case it was a bit of an incompatibility between Israel's ap...
Beethoven Symphonies - best perf + sonics on CD
Can we go back to Brahms for a second? Yesterday I made the trip to Chicago to hear Thielemann/Dresden State Orchestra do the Brahms 4. Wow, that was some kind of Brahms. Best Brahms 4 I ever heard. Well worth 7 hours of driving and a $30 parking ...
Sony Xa5400 ES vs Cary CD 500 demo
Sunnyjim, I owned the Cambridge and replaced it with the Sony 5400. The sony was much better in my system on RB, and of course also has the ability to play SACD. After owning the Sony for a year I had the ModWright mods done. The modded Sony is ju...
Passive/line stage HT preamp?
It appears that you are looking for volume reduction only from a single source to your amps. There are a couple of potential downsides to using digital domain volume reduction from the oppo. In addition to loss of resolution as mentioned above, yo...
Chemistry question on aluminum
I would be concerned if I lived very close to a beach with salt spray present in the air. Absent salt spray, Drrsutlif's comments are accurate. As far as aluminium and alzheimer's disease, that arose from a finding that amyloid plaque contains ele...
Cables more hype than value?
At last, a new topic that has never been discussed before now!
Beethoven Symphonies - best perf + sonics on CD
Lowrider, I have a Sony SACD of a 1957 Szell/Clevleand Orchestra recording of Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, and Till Eulenspiegel that is just stunning. What was possible in the late 50s and 60's is just amazing. It is all about the master ...
Beethoven Symphonies - best perf + sonics on CD
Guys I suspect that the master tapes on 3&4 are superior to the rest. That is why the DG remasters sound so much better than the other symphonies, and why the Japanese selected the 3rd and 4th for their efforts as opposed to the remaining symp...
Beethoven Symphonies - best perf + sonics on CD
Lowrider, as I said earlier, this is more about artistic merit than sonics. The 3rd and 4th are stunning in terms of recording quality. This is my favorite 7th, just wish they could have improved the sonics.
Have cables become somewhat of a snake-oil topic.
Kiddman, the very thing you are describing has also been a major put off to me. I tend to reject a priori anything that has a whiff of pseudoscience about it. I had rather tepidly run an experiment with a rather expensive power cord several years ...

Waxwaves, Thanks! I just updated my virtual system last night, so you might want to check out the new stuff. To answer your question, I had a Tara IC back in the early 90's that was possibly the best single ended RCA I ever owned. I have been so d...
At What Age Does An Audiophile Buy His Last Amp?
Mitch4t,First of all, congrats on having been born in the best year of the last century. You are in distinguished company. I think many of us as we approach retirement undergo the same sort of analysis. In some respects it is a farewell to higher ...
Coincident Linestage vs CJ CT5 or Allnic L-3000
MrMitch, I don't listen to much rock, but I think the CSL will be fine with any music. I will say it is just fabulous with chamber music. I am listening to the new Shostakovich release by the Pacifica Quartet now, as it turns out. I have found tha...
Who Will Stand the Test of Time?
Courant,It does not appear that my statement and yours with respect to Foster's music are all that far apart. "Most popular music describes a window in time. Once that time is past, the music becomes a relic that is at best a curiosity." "Foster w...
Who Will Stand the Test of Time?
Courant, I think you may have missed my point. There are aspects of the human experience that don't change. There are far more aspects of the human experience that do change. Popular music tends to focus on the ephemeral. I'm not sure what Steven ...
