Best Concert DVD Best show and lights: Phil Collins Live in Paris. Best sound: Eagles Hell Freezes Over, or Fleetwood Mack The Dance.
Senn HD600 headphones = what Speakers? It definitely depends on what you use to drive your headphones or the room speakers. The HD600 really begin to shine with even a relatively inexpensive entry level amp such as those produced by Headroom. Room-speaker interations are also a factor ...
mbl 101d speakers suck My experience with the 101d driven by lots of MBL power is similar to Rcprice's experience. However, I think they've solved the brightness problem, and not with a tone of room tuning either. The deepest base just wasn't there, but what was, was de...
The best speaker you ever heard? SoundLab M-1, then Wilson Max, then Pipedreams (largest ones, forget the model), then VMPS RM-40, then Legacy Whisper driven by Coda class A amps, then Merlin with BAM driven by tubes, then Wilson Watt Puppy 6.0, then ML Prodigy driven by Krell mo...
How good are VMPS RM-40? There are also two upgrades of capacitors: $550 and $900. The Harmonic Discord board indicates they make a great speaker even better. It's hard for me to imagine. Has anyone heard the RM-40 with upgraded capacitors?
Which Processor: Sunfire or Bryston? Thanks, one and all, for your considered responses. I'll do some listening. Any one actually compare these two directly?
used Revel Salon vs. used Wilson Watt Puppy6??? I'm a fan of both Wilson's and Revel. Even with the W/P 6s selling used near $10K the revel will still be less expensive and will probably give you a little more bottom end. Unfortunately my view is that a brand new VMPS RM-40 beats them both in b...
A good CD transport to use seperately from DVD Consider the Denon DVD 5000. It retailed for $2500 but was discontinued about a year ago. You should be able to find one on ebay for under 500. Shockingly great price for a DVD or CD player of this quality. It is very heavy, and well build. On the...
Shure V15V cartridge. Worth investing in? Campbell has the V15 pegged. It's a good chartridge, but moving magnet just can't compete with moving coil, except in trackability. Once you hear even a relatively inexpensive Denon MC chartridge, you'll be hooked on MC. Try a Denon, or a Shelter....
Legacy Whisper-- Opininions The Whisper doesn't image as wide, deep and pin point as the Watt/Puppy 6, but does sounds faster and fuller. It definitely needs a fast sub. In many ways it is one cone speaker that can be compared, but is inferior, to electrostatics in speed. Th...
How good are VMPS RM-40? Actually there are two 10" woofers and a tunable passive radiator in the RM-40. Cones do the work only below 166 hz, the rest is ribbons. There's apparently even a kit form available, and a money back guarantee. By a large margin these speakers at...
How good are VMPS RM-40? I think the difference in the sound of the RM-40 and any cone speaker I've ever heard (including Whisper, Watt/Puppy 6.0, Wilson Maxx, Avangarde, etc.) is at least similar to the difference between a good MC cartridge and a MM cartridge. Go hear t...
Stereophile looses Jonathan Scull Rhljazz: Well said. Love your Robin Leach metaphor. I actually heard "bass that makes your pants flap". We'll, actually it was my wife's pants -- in the Merlin room this CES. No kindding. Fine sound. Maybe us mortals can afford that and don't need...
Stereophile looses Jonathan Scull Well, I too think Stereophile is going or gone the way of Stereo. To reform, they need to abandon the Recommended Components list and clean up their act. Maybe I read too much of the reviewing the reviewers at http://www.high-endaudio.com but I ca...
Wiring my house for sound There are some existing theads that may help you. Search for Romex or Hubble. It's worth doing. I put in a deicated sub pannel and built in more dedicated circuits than I'll ever need in my basement listening room. Enjoy the project. |
