Speaker ohm's?????
There is no such thing as an "8-ohm amp." For that matter, the nominal impedance of a speaker is just that--nominal. This is another example of how meaningless most quoted specs are. What would be more useful to know is what is the minimum resista...
Why are you listening to that? ?
When I'm working on choosing or evaluating components, I concentrate on top-notch recordings. But that's the only time I do. The rest of the time, I'm listening to music, not electronics. And, because I've chosen components carefully, I know witho...
How do I start?
Keep it simple: a multichannel receiver and a full set of speakers. For this round at least, buy your cables and interconnects from Radio Shack. Some A-goners will pooh-pooh this suggestion, but in your price range Sound & Vision is a better s...
Basic Repertoire
The problem is getting someone who both knows music and can identify good sound. The only guy I know who's written anything rating recordings on their sound quality is Howard Ferstler, and I wouldn't necessarily ask him which Beethoven 5 to buy.Fo...
Is it possible for something to be the best?
No, if you mean "best for everybody." First of all, we all listen in different rooms, and a speaker that sounds great in one room can sound awful in another. Second, no audio system can replicate a live concert perfectly, and we each have our own ...
Best band never to release a truly great album?
"Roger the Engineer" might make the greatness cut, although I think the band's best work came earlier, in the first year with Beck and those great singles that made up Side 1 of the U.S. album "Having a Rave Up." Fill that period out ("Shapes of T...
Two channel home theater set up
T1: I think he's talking about a unit that can simulate surround through two speakers. Perhaps someone more familiar with it can fill in the details.
Best band never to release a truly great album?
This thread provides solid proof that there's no accounting for taste. That said, I'd nominate the Yardbirds. And I'm surpised nobody's mentioned the Dead, who are always described by the committed as "much better in concert."As for quibbles with ...
How long do the speakers last before a service?
With the exception of foam surrounds, most speakers are pretty indestructible--unless you do something to destroy them. I've got some 20-year-old rubber sourrounds that are still in good shape.
Two channel home theater set up
I will second Sean's suggestion about the Polks. I have a pair of Polk 7s hooked up in my den that I bought used in 1983, and they're still going strong. Not up to today's standards in some ways, but for your purposes they (or the 10s) would fit t...
A/B test of interconnects - Will this work???
Well, it'll work in the sense that you'll be able to compare the two, but why not take it a step further? Give the remote to a friend, so that you don't know which I/C is being used. Then try to guess which I/C it is. (Do this after you've listene...
any decent amps 17" wide?
Different approach: Marantz makes a mono amp that's 3.5 inches wide. You could buy 4 of them and bi-amp.
Need inexpensive amp help and questions on Hype
There is a lot of hype everywhere. Meaningful and reliable descriptions of the sound signature of a particular component are rare. I suggest you stop reading reviews/recommendations/websites and go listen to things. When you've found something tha...
How do you get the "real" feel of music?
Beetle: Your electronics aren't the problem. Three things really matter: speakers, room, source material. If you like certain music, there's not much you can do about the last (though you owe it to yourself to buy a few XRCDs just to hear what goo...
is there really a need for two subs?
First off, it is not true that "subs are nondirectional." It is true that low bass is "nondirectional," which is to say that we cannot tell where it's coming from. But it's quite likely that a sub will be producing energy up into the range where w...
