Stereophile "confirms" Moncrieff's SACD comments ? Um, a one-bit system like DSD has a HUGE amount of noise that cannot be eliminated. That's why they use nosie-shaping--to move the noise into the ultrasonic range where (best evidence suggests) it won't matter. So all that noise is supposed to be ...
Cable vs. Electronics: biggest bang for the buck I'd guess that if a cable made that big a difference in your system, there is something very wrong with the cable you are using, and it could be improved upon for a lot less than $7K.
Which components produce a convincing 3-D image? Speakers, room, source material. Nothing else even comes close.
Cartridge frequency response specs Specs are ADVERTISING. (Sorry to shout.) There are many ways to measure a component, and you can assume that manufacturers use whatever method makes their products look best--and that may mean using different methods, or reporting results in diffe...
I can't really hear a big difference Component output levels are not standardized, Dennis. Level-matching will therefore always be a challenge when comparing components. If the Sherwood's output is higher, and you're not properly compensating for that, it would explain a good deal of...
I can't really hear a big difference Life is like that. Remember, some folks insist that good CDPs should all sound alike. There's no guarantee that if you spend a lot of money, you will get a much different sound. In fact, you appear to be guilty of ignoring the most basic rule of a...
www.high-endaudio.com & Arthur Salvatore He's a bit over the top, but anybody who's ever so much as thought about buying a component on the basis of a review really ought to read his take on the audio press (as well as Rich Hardesty's at www.audioperfectionist.com).
Design an entire system for $800? ? The key for someone like this is to keep the electronics costs to a minimum. You can sometimes buy a 2-channel receiver and a CD player made by a company you've actually heard of from a place like J&R for well under $300. That leaves you $500+...
Love for music shatter by highend equipment I've always thought that a good performance on a mid-fi system beats a bad performance on a high-end system. I'm quite dubious of people who believe otherwise, and yet claim to love music. That said, when I get up in the morning, my wife is listeni...
Speaker break in? Brand new speakers can change a little over time, but at least the measurable differences between a brand new and broken-in speaker have been found to be smaller than the typical variation between any two of the same model. At the same time, it's ...
What will become of my beloved CDs? In the future, you won't own recordings at all. You'll subscribe to a service that allows you to download any music you want, at any resolution you want, any time you want.As for your CDs, there will always be players around, but don't expect much...
Jazz lovers. Any Dizzy Gillespie recommendations? Sonny Side Up, w/Rollins & Stitt.
Three best Dylan albums??? Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde were all released over a period of less than a year and a half, if I'm not mistaken. In roughly the same period, the Beatles put out Help, Rubber Soul and Revolver. I'd call tha...
Classical lp dilemma - recommendations, please There are plenty of published guides out there. My favorite is The Virgin Guide to Classical Music by Jeremy J. Beadle (lots of music background, and multiple recommendations, but I'm not sure it's still in print). Ted Libbey and Jim Svejda also h...
Speaker ohm's????? I've heard the Concertos driven by a 100w/ch Yamaha integrated, and they sounded fine--in a somewhat larger room than you've got, probably. I imagine you could get away with 60w in a bedroom. Best to try things you can take back if they don't work. |
