I'm going to buy my first tube amp. I need honest blunt opinions
I agree with Quicksilver, and I would go for the 100W KT Mono amps, not the Mid-Mono. 90dB is loud, and the Mid Monos would squash dynamics at those levels. I suggest staying away from the Cary amps because getting tubes for these babies requires ...
KT-77 vs. KT-66
Hilde45, The M60s were actually designed around the EL34 tube per Mike and will happily use these as well as 6L6s. I ran both in my M60s with grrat success.
Matched Tubes Quicksilver Line Pre
Agreed, These tubes will last a long time as long as you don't leave the pre on crazy hours every day, etc.
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Thanks to all for your suggestions, and Ralph, you are my new hero, seriously. Thank you! I really love the amp and did not want to do something nuts (i.e. toss it), so I think a solution is in sight now.
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
OK, now we are getting somewhere because without the input tube (12AU7), the noise has vanished...gone. So Ralph, I'm assuming a good tech would simply check for bad components in the input stage? And I'm guessing this also eliminates things like ...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Ralph, Awesome advice, and thank you for these suggestions. I am going to try removing the input and driver tubes and see what happens...Stay tuned! Btw, the amp is noisy no matter where it's operated, so not an RFI issue from what I can tell.
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
No RFI/EMF sources and no AC issues, and I have tried this amp in 2 completely different systems w/ 3 pairs of speakers, in FL and now in SC. I have been in audio for 35 years and never encountered an issue like this. Amp bias is dead on as well, ...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Carlsbad, This amp exhibits noise when not connected to a preamp, and I have tried it with 4 completely different tube sets. What do you suggest may be generating the noise?
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Hi Larry, My very first guess was also a bad solder joint somewhere, but Mike personally went though the amp and could not locate any. And the binding posts have always been fine to my knowledge...nice and tight. The guitar amp shop actually did ...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Yep, did that as well. Sent QS a video of the amp making the noise that was very clearly audible. I offered the same same file to the second repair shop but was told he did not need to see it because "the scope would catch anything wrong." Btw, my...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Hi Larry, Thanks for your suggestions, but the amp exhibits noise with no preamp interconnect attached...just the amp and speaker load. And it does this attached to multiple AC outlets in different states! Additionally replacing the noisy amp wit...
Spendor S8e vs Spendor A7 vs Spendor SP1/2 vs Harbeth SHL5
As someone who has owned SP 1/2E's (and a pair of original SP 1/2s) since 2011 as well as SP 2/3s since 1999, I have thousands and thousands of hours of Spendor experience. Compared to the S8e, which I also lived with, the Classic line is smoother...
How do you find time to enjoy your $$$ speakers and system?
Surprise your family or with a nice vacation to Europe...one that you will not be on. Then stock the bar and fridge and pretend you're 24 again.
An interesting experience with power cable.
To quote Alex Lifeson's Grammy speech: "Blah blah blah. Blah bla blah blah, and blah blah."
Cable recommendations/Spendor
As a Spendor Classic owner for 24 years, all you need is simple 12g twisted copper; bare ends are fine. I drive my 1/2Es with Quicksilver M120 monoblocs and Audible Illusions M3B, and the sound is to die for. You do not need to waste $$ on fancy c...
