Tubes? Transistors? Which are better?
Y'all have gone way off the original subject of tube vs. transistors sound. As stated, some (like me) prefer the mosfet sound as a nice in-between tubes & bipolars. Belles 150A Hot Rod amp was just reviewed by Stereophile; they proclaimed this...
smoothing those sibilants...
Cable Company www.fatwyre.com has an audio grade Hubble wall outlet that I got for only $15; that helped. An improvement yes, but the Wattgate 381 is even better albiet *much more expensive @$250 list - the sale price was $189 when I got mine. Als...
Tubes? Transistors? Which are better?
(1) Carl E doesn't appear to be saying "I can hear better than you" at all. Carl appears to be (correctly) projecting that 'quote' onto D'Agostino. (2) I'm now a hardline solid-state fan, converted from my early years w/tubes. High maintenance &am...
Why is amp toroid humming?
I wouldn't even pop the cover off of any equipment that's still in-warranty; that could work against you. Transformer laminations are probably buzzing so it needs to be replaced. Line voltage variations shouldn't matter, even +/- 10% in a proper d...
smoothing those sibilants...
I had grungie-problems that turned out to be AC power related. I tried a lot of the things you've tried; finally figured out it wasn't the signal cables or the hardware. Look closer at your AC power line feed. You likely need some decent line-filt...
preamp-poweramp hiss (loud)
I used to have a PAT4 & it was rather noisy. Can't explain what's happening re: your balance control affecting that though? I did replace all the stock resistors with low noise metal films of identical values, which helped alot.
Mismatched power tubes sound?
Is the the core magnetization a dynamic situation only, or is this a static condition resulting in permanent degradation? (I would suspect it's hopefully only a temporary condition)? And if it is a permanemt problem, then can you degauss the core ...
Phase Linear upgrades and tweaks
If this question is from Mr. Tim Whyte, then I doubt I can enlighten you beyond your already extensive expertise. Dunno about those "well-known" tweaks; wasn't aware of that. However, I did some home-brew upgrading in my old Phase4000 via replacin...
B&O, overpriced artistic piece of audio?
Paul please sober up! I use to service audio gear in a retail shop. B&O = B.O.! Looks snazzy, but the build quality is, well let's just say that it ISN'T. Sounds OK but just OK. Would make a good basement-bar system (or for the garage). Or put...
Speaker cable termination
Soldering is not advised; read the Audioquest White Paper regarding cold crimp connections. You can order their high-grade silver-plated soft-copper lugs (in whatever size you need) very inexpensively. However a low budget hand crimper will not gi...
How to measure the power output?
Lamp filament used as dummy load is not a valid measurement, because filament resistance varies with conduction/temperature. You need an audio oscillator, dummy load power resistor & oscilloscope, & also need to know ohm's law (I'm not goi...
Voltage Regulators
Sounds similar to a Sola line-regulation transformer with a tertiary buck/boost winding. I have one in my shop, which I use for line isolation/saftey purposes only. The limited power available would likely constrain current-transients, but that ma...
Anyone Know What VTL sounds like?
Luke Manley's VTL gear is highly regarded by many (best of show @ WCES & HiFI '99). I home-auditioned both the model 2.5 preamp & the revered 5.5. Construction wasn't looking very good inside, considering the $$ asking price. I experienced...
Burn-in time Vs. Getting used to a sound
Breakin effects are certainly valid. "Accustomization" is also a valid, although probably much less recognized phenomenon. Example: I extensively auditioned a pair of used speakers at my dealer's shop, then finally brought them home. Buyers remors...
Any good bi-wire speaker cable (used)..
Zodiac I just tried to email you, but it bounced undeliverable. AGon doesn't like for us to plug our for-sale's on the chat's, but here ya go, since I tried the 'right way' which failed. I have a 20' pair of used good condition Audioquest Crystal ...
