Why does my laptop annoy me less than my rig?
I think your own explanation is dead on. The brain has an uncanny ability to fill in whatever is missing when listening to something thats sounds like a cheap radio. When your system starts to approach the sound of the real musical event it seems ...
WOW,, way to go Alice
At least Alice is not playing State Fairs. I saw Alice do his 'Killer' concert in a little hall and it was a great show - all big snakes and getting his head cut off. That was back in 1971 and I was a kid. Part of me is glad he's still chuggin awa...
What Turntable to buy under $600 ?
Someone is selling an alignment disk here at audiogon for about $10 that looks like all you need for set up. Its listed in analog under 'table' and is called 'once'. Think I will be ordering one myself. Shipping is included which is good because i...
Harbeth speaker serial numbering
If the serial # are the same except they end with A and B, this tells you they were originally sold as a pair. Some manufacturers "match" drivers and even tweak crossovers, or it could be the finish is matched. It at least designates that the spea...
My son and the Alban Berg String Quartet
You dont let him wear that bow tie and derby to school do you?
Today was Count Basie's Birthday
If you think Count Basie puts you to sleep try "88 Basie Street" I have read that the cd sounds great, and if it sounds close to the vinyl it must. An American icon, the Count surely knew the meaning of the word SWING!
Red Dog Tracks
Another guy from way back when whos still making cool music is Tony Joe White, he did "Poke Sallad Annie". His last release had guests including Emmylou, Shelby and Lucinda. A fresh listen to "Poke Sallad" and I was surprised what a great song it ...

older totem model 1 vs newer totem arro, rainmaker
I would definitely go with the Model Ones if they are in good shape.
Where do you find new music?
College Radio Stations! I have heard more great new (and old) music recently by tuning in college radio staions in my area. Around here there is very little commercial FM worth listening to. The typical hit stations, hip-hop and rap and of course ...
Merlin TSM-MM vs. Tyler Reference Monitor
There was a thread at one point here about the Tylos' bass being "missing in action", you might want to search. Many sing the praises of the Tylers, but for whatever reason, I never got them to work well in my system. Totem Model Ones sounded much...
See it frequently: What exactly is a "troll"?

What numbers are important in SS amps specs
The spec wars are over. Numbers, even power ratings (wpc)can be completely deceiving. There seems to be many factors that come into play that determmine how well an amp will drive a speaker. Ask about the experiences of others with specific combin...
Best Leonard Cohen CD?
I havent heard his latest but 'Im Your Man' is a favorite of mine. I also recommend the Jennefer Warnes cover album 'Famous Blue Raincoat' as a well produced "audiophile" recording. I enjoy listening to various covers of 'Bird on a Wire' from Joe ...
Why are big speakers in small rooms bad?
I have heard my PMC FB1s in a very small room and they sounded wonderful. These speakers are only 6" 2-ways but they are transmission loaded and rated to go well below 30hz. You will never know til you try them.
