Distortion from Dahlquist DQ-20... If they need reconing that would be something you could see, are the cones or surrounds damaged? If not it sounds like the voice coils are rubbing, not a good sign. I would have them checked out by a professional and be prepared to replace the bad...
Blues recommendations anyone? Eric Clapton's solo on "Strange Brew" was lifted note for note from Albert Kings early hit "Crosscut Saw", but if you really want to hear his influence it would be on Stevie Ray Vaughn's work. Young Albert King taught himself to play holding a rig...
Any John Hartford fans? I remember John Harford all the way back from when he was a guest on shows like The Smothers Brothers and Glen Cambell shows. He was "Americana" before it was a musical catagory.
Does the Spendor S8e invert phase? I once read a review of a Vienna Acoustics speaker in which the reviewer discussed the merits of the crossover that inverted phase for the tweeter only. The reviewer as I recall preferred the speaker with the tweeter restored to "in phase" by reve...
Speakers in the range of $3 to $4.5k per pair? You might want to consider using some of your budget on a preamp upgrade. Some (including myself) have found untapped potential in their Rotel power amp by upgrading the preamp. Just a thought. Good luck.
Best Concert Film Mad Dogs and Englishmen - Joe CockerFeatures great performances by Joe, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge and others. This tour in March of 1970 was put together in eight days (really!) mostly by Russell and rehearsals produced the classic single "The L...
The best audiophile "gag" gift for X-Mas Just for the record, "Intelligent Design" is not science. If you insist it should be discussed in school, let it be a topic in philosophy class. It is the business of science to explore and describe the physical world, it is not the job of scienti...
The best audiophile "gag" gift for X-Mas Ye of so little faith, perhaps you did no say the proper prayer-incantation?! I for one, once "faith healed" a power amp. After a power outage the transformer was physically humming, but after "laying hands" and thinking positive and deeply spirit...
What new music did you get for Christmas? I gave my sister and brother in law "Mercy Now" this year on vinyl. Also gave them the self titled "Duhks" cd and "Tijuana Sessions 3" by Nortec Collective. These are my faves for 05'. I didnt receive any music this year but Im about to look at vi...
Zappa? Peter mentions "Chungas Revenge", an album that seems to mark a transition of sorts (there were many), one of my favorites. The dirty wawa blues licks on "Road Ladies" stopped my buddy in his tracks when I played it for him. He was a Jimmie Page f...
Which Intergrated amp for starter?? Rotel makes great integrated amps if you truly mean "budget", not "budget according to high end money".
Why are CDs so hard to open? I hate it too. I like the cardboard ones, but sometimes the cd falls out of them. Vinyl album covers have cool covers, remember?
Zappa? One of my favorite concert memories was sitting on the floor in front of Frank Zappa at the Park Center (think small)in Charlotte NC and watching his band, with the full horn section preform 'the Grand Wazoo'. Amazing.Zappa kinda lost me with his ...
Burned out hi fi salesman I cant agree with the 5% thing. I cant say whether equipment is that close and set up is difficult, but I have heard a huge difference in the way stuff in salons sound. I have heard very "high end" stuff sound awful and modest stuff sound damn goo...
What is compressed?? Compression refers to dynamic range. This is the difference in amplitude (loudness) from the most quiet sound to the loudest in the program material. Compression is used to reduce the difference, it is used to make recordings sound better on equip... |
