Thiel 3.6's vs. Vandersteen 3 sigs
If you can find an old copy of the Audio Perfectionist Journal, Richard Hardesty does an excellent comparison between Theil and Vandersteen.I think price wise, a better comparison would be between the Theil's and the Quatro's.I owned 3a sigs for a...
Thiel 3.6's vs. Vandersteen 3 sigs
Vandersteen uses some of the highest quality components in even his lower line of speakers that are available. I know, I've taken them apart.Opinions like pepperdog just shows his biased ignorance. BTW, Vandersteen's are some of the more accurate ...
Ayre V5xe
Is there really such a thing as "Best" in audio? I don't think so. There's just a lot of different stuff! You will get as many responses for amps as they're posters as is the usual case. Use to be audio was about accuracy. Now it's about whatever ...
Vandersteen Quatro v Magnepan 3.6
The Quatro is a very neutral speaker with a great bottom end. The 3.6 is a speaker a lot of folks like. I personally find it a little goosed in the midrange and adding a bit of sound that isn't really there. This deviation from neutral is what I t...
Ayre V5xe
I think sometimes we expect to "Hear" something special from our amps. The Ayre V5 takes on the sound of whatever is feeding it. It truly doesn't inject its own sound. After going through as many amps as I have, yes, I would rank the Ayre up there...
Balanced xlr or rca for Ayre C5xe
It is provided everything else is truly balanced. Otherwise, no.
Ayre preamp v5x gain
It's actually 4db unbalanced and 10db balanced. It's certainly not as much gain as some preamps but it's adequate for most amps. It is best run balanced. Ultimate volume will not be affected provided the amp has reasonable sensitivity. I found no ...
AVR receivers
There is a used Marantz SR-19 THX receiver for sell asking $650. It is an excellent receiver and built better than the newer ones in my opinion. Excellent sonics. I think it retailed for about $2000. Hard to beat. It has a pathway for pure 2 chann...
Aesthetix Calypso How many versions?
There was one early change to a few resistors that would/could become slightly noisy. This was done several years back after the first production models hit the market. I think you're good to go with any serial number above about 2650 or so. Of co...
How far would you drive to audition a component?
6-8 hours. Of course when I take longer trips, I always look up shops.
Calypso owners - question about muting & start-up
It is muted in standby mode. Unless it is ready to play, any other time it's muted. I see no risk what so ever.
Rumbling ?
You need to better isolate the table. It sounds like you are getting a little low frequency feedback. This is why some preamps had a filter to roll off the bass below 20hz.I've also found you could lower the dustcover down while playing and this w...
Ayre C-5xe vs. Ayre D-1xe
They are both really good players but my vote goes to the C5xe. It sounds warmer without what that normally implies. To me, the D1xe sounds a touch sterile. The C5xe is one of the better players out there period. It offers about as good a sound as...
Ayre CX7e vs. Meridain G08
I went back and read the CX7(not the CX7e) review from the May 2003 Stereophile. JA stated the CX7 had some of the lowest jitter(159 picoseconds of peak to peak) of any player he had measured. The higher levels of jitter seemed to start showing up...
Ayre CX7e vs. Meridain G08
Mr. Hansen, First let me say I hope you're recovering well from your accident and will be back over at Ayre soon.Second, thanks for contributing to this forum. It's always relevant to have a designer with your reputation contribute.I think you are...
