Audio research ref 160M vs ref 250SE
Biketony, check me on the internal circuit breaker feature on the Ref 160M (S).  If ARC added that feature, that's another maintenance headache that is eliminated and another "buy" point in favor of the 160M (S). In the old days, if a power tune b...
Audio research ref 160M vs ref 250SE
Well here is a factor that may drive your decision.  ARC is now charging $275 per tube for matched KT-150s.  I surmise that the Ref 250SE runs twice as many KT-150s as compared to the Ref 160M.  If so, … do the math and think how much tube replace...
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
This thread is very timely.  I own an ARC Ref 150SE amp.  My amp uses 8 KT-150 tubes.  I either read or heard that KT-150 QC has dropped over the years.  I understand that ARC and some of the major tube retailers have a high KT-150 reject rate.In ...
Can you tell the difference between Tidal and Spotify
Ok, time to embarrass an old guy.  What is MQA???  How does it work.
Linda Ronstadt
Sorry to be contrarian, but I am a big Linda fan. I have many of her records and CDs, including the Nelson Riddle LP trio.  I amazed by her vocal range and diversity.  I love her personal musical variations of old standards from whatever era.  In ...
Paypal error. Can't pay for the item I just purchased!
I posted the following comment on another thread:"I haven't been all that active a buyer/seller on the A'gon for some time now. My most recent acquisition was a trade up of my ARC Ref 5SE to the Ref 6. I did the flip with an ARC dealer. The Ref...

@tomic601 , I understand that Upscale does special QC and matching for 6H30 tubes for ARC amps and preamps.  I have bought a lot of tubes from Upscale (e.g.,Tungsol 6550s and 6H30s) and have been quite satisfied.BTW, ARC uses 6550WEs for the power...

@lalitk - in what amp did you drop the KT-150s into?

fsonicsmith …. interesting post about Jim McShane.  You said that "Jim McShane- [told you] that he no longer sells KT150’s because the Tungsol factory is putting out so many crap tubes that he can no longer supply the customer with a reliable tube...

I would like to repost a few comments that I made in the now deleted thread.  As a threshold matter, I want to restate that I am an ARC fan.  All my electronic gear is ARC stuff.  I have never experienced a catastrophic breakdown in any of my ARC ...
HAVE ALL SALES STOPPED ON AUDIOGON ???
I haven't been all that active a buyer/seller on the A'gon for some time now.  My most recent acquisition was a trade up of my ARC Ref 5SE to the Ref 6.  I did the flip with an ARC dealer.  The Ref 6 was a broken-in dealer demo (610 hours).  The m...
ARC Ref 3 - thoughts?
Hi Tim,I have done the Ref 3 upgrade circuit.  Namely, the Ref 5, Ref 5 SE and now the Ref 6. IMO, there was an incremental and noticeable improvement from the Ref 3 to the Ref 5SE and then again to the Ref 6.  I recall seeing a few Ref 3s listed ...
Linda Ronstadt
Thanks.  Very nostalgic.  I have about 6 or 7 of Linda's old albums and a few CDs, including a CD of her singing some Mexican standards.  I also have the 3 album LP set where she sang American standards with Nelson Riddle.I love Linda's music and ...
speaker impeadance question
Thanks Ralph. I agree. My amp has 14db of NF and "low'ish" output impedance: JA measured low-end output impedance of 1 ohm off the 8 ohm tap and .55 ohms off the 4 ohm taps.  Converted into output voltage db variation as a function of FR, JA measur...
