VPI Classic hum
Bassraptor, very curious, very curious indeed. As mentioned above, I installed a Maestro Wood cartridge on my Classic 1 with stock arm. I may be hyper critical here, but I think I detect a bass resonance or ringing in the 50+ to 100+ Hz registers....
VPI Classic hum
Bassraptor, which Classic model do you have? The Classic 1 and Classic 2 come standard with the JMW 10.5i SE arm, which per the VPI website is "made from aluminum and stainless steel, critically damped in the armtube to keep the arm and wires from...
Best used VHS player....
I may have a couple of old VHS units lying around. If you're interested, send me an e mail and I'll look around the house. If I have an extra unit, I'd be happy to let it go for a token plus shipping and PayPal. The only thing is that I haven't us...
VPI Classic hum
Bassraptor: I agree with Actusreus' comment about Grados, at least the Sonata. I used to own a Grado Sonata MM (5 mV), which was mounted on a restored vintage Thorens TD 160. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of the hum. The sonics were ok,...
VPI Classic hum
Bassraptor: I installed a CA Maestro Wood on my Classic and am experiencing probelms with low frequency resonance/ringing. I've been trading e mails with Mike at VPI for over a week about this issue. In the most recent exchange of messages, Mike t...
VPI Classic hum
UUUhhmm, I also own a VPI Clasic and I mounted a Clear Audio Maestro Wood, a MM with a 3.6mV output. I think the I/C from the TT to the phono pre may be some off the shelf "higher end" Radio Shack RCA cable. I don't know if its shielded. I don't u...
Newbie question: Amplifiers, Volume, Clipping?
Blindjim, I'm with you. Tonight I was listening to an old record that I've owned for 35+ years, George Solti conducting Chicago Symph. Orchestra, Beethoven 9th (London ffrr LP), 4th movement. As is often the case with classical music, Beethoven's ...

Restarting this thread. I would still appreciate any suggestions. My Grandfather is still looking. Thanks
Newbie question: Amplifiers, Volume, Clipping?
Hi Al and Hifihvn: I had a question about tube amp clipping. In the case where the tube amp uses output trannies, if the signal fed to the primary coils in the output trannies clips, what type of output is induced into the secondaries? Let me elab...
Does 'Accuracy' Matter or exist ?
Hey 57s4me: I was just about to make a comment about Angels on Pinheads. But then I caught your post from Friday: "I'll continue to read and enjoy the comments about and reviews of more and more 'accurate' equipment till I expire - after all, we r...
What is best VTA for Clearaudio Maestro Cartridge?
If any of the contributor to this thread see this post, I have a follow up question. In connection with setting up and adjusting the Maestro Wood on the JMW tone arm, did anyone check playback quality with the mat on and off, or with the rubber wa...
Does 'Accuracy' Matter or exist ?
Agreed -- and well stated. As another A'gon poster said, we have to go with our ears, which obviously is a highly subjective exercise. Take a look at an OP that asks members to list their favorate speaker. At last count, there are over 1300 posts....
What is best VTA for Clearaudio Maestro Cartridge?
Dcbingaman, here's my post from the other thread: "I'm still fiddling. My most recent tweak is VTF. Clear Audio recommends between 2 amd 2.5 grams, with 2.2 grams recommended. I followed that recommendation, but I noticed that there was a low freq...
What is best VTA for Clearaudio Maestro Cartridge?
Take a look at my OP -- "VPI Classic/Clear Audio Maestro Wood Question." I'm tweaked out!
VPI Classic/Clear Audio Maestro Wood Question
Hi Mark -- you're 100% correct. I'm still fiddling. My most recent tweak is VTF. Clear Audio recommends between 2 amd 2.5 grams, with 2.2 grams recommended. I followed that recommendation, but I noticed that there was a low frequency resonance whe...
