AUDIO RESEARCH PH7,,, How to adjust pots ?
Andy, I own a PH-7. Not familiar with what you're talking about re the "little blue pots." Please explain.
Audio Research, next upgrade?
One other thought. If ARC still upgrades the VT100 MkII to the MkIII, you may want to price it out and consider doing it. Give Cal at ARC a call. He always has good advice to share. BTW, another upgrade is changing out your 6550C tubes to the new ...
Audio Research, next upgrade?
Just a thought. Your CDP is a bit dated. I suggest trying to pick up either a CD-5 or Ref CD-8. The rest of your gear is pretty balanced. In truth, there's no end to upgrade fever.
Cartridge Recommendations
Raul and Nandric, based on MY experience with the Virtuoso and Maestro, I agree with your advice that if the Virtuoso can be fixed, then fix it. I also recommend the Maestro --based on my hands on experience. Sorry Bill, I've been there and done i...
Lifespan of a quality solid state amplifier?
I too will post my last comment. Even though I know squat about electronics, I repeat what I posted before. I own 2 vintage Crown "back-up" amps from the 70s. The darn things are bomb proof. Even though I have sent them to the Crown factory every ...
Audio Research Ph8 compared to Reference phono 2
I second that request. I own an ARC PH-7, which admittedly sounds pretty good. I'm curious though, if I was to consider an upgrade, whether I would realize a major improvement with a PH-8 versus the Ref Phono 2, which, btw, is now the Ref Phono 2 SE.
Do tube amps benefit from using APS?
Got a question. An audio buddy suggested that I run between 4 and 6 dedicated power lines for my gear. As you can see from my System description, my electronics are all ARC tube. The amp puts out 130 wpc and "idles" at about 400 watts. When "fired...
CD Recommendation -- EMI Tchaikovsky Selections
Thanks Neal. I reported my OP in the Music Forum. KR4 and Richard, are you suggesting that the recording quality was more about Mariss Jansons than EMI. That would be helpful to know. One way or the other, the Jansons Tchaikovsky recording I have ...
Serious Classical Labels
Al and others: where can one source these labels. I'm embarrassed to admit that most I am not familiar with. Are these re-issues or just old pressings that are still being bought and sold.By chance there is a great record shop near my house that s...
Cartridge Recommendations
The Ortfon 2M Black is a very nice cartridge. Used to own a 2M myself. Only comment is that I found it bright and analytical, but many others have raved about it. If you liked the Virtuoso, you will LUV the Maestro. One of the best cartridges I ev...
Cartridge interface with ARC PH3SE
Wynnosu, I have a similar ARC set up, Ref 5 (pre), VS 115 (amp) and PH-7 (phono). The PH-7 has 58 db gain. I've spoken with Cal at ARC on several occassions about the type of cartys that will match best with the PH-7. He has consistently advised m...
How to check for stylus wear?
Dopogue -- agree 100%. Sarcher, I do listen to a lot of music. Unfortunately, I lost track of hours. To my ears, the Zephyr sounds ok. Problem is that a slow degredation is hard to detect. Fortunately, I have a DV 20Xs back up carty. If I send the...
Audio Research Corp Ref 5 SE
Darkstar, I spoke with Calvin today about the Ref 5 SE and he confirmed what Doggiehowser said. Yup - new face plate. I even asked Calvin if I could keep the old face-plate so my wife wouldn't catch the change. He said nothin' doin'. I guess I'll ...
Audio Research Corp Ref 5 SE
Hey Missioncoonery: Based on a call with Calvin at ARC, I understand the Ref 5 will be discontinued, to be replaced with the Ref 5 SE. So, I guess you might say that the SE IS the Ref 6, at least for a while.
Audio Research Ref 5 and Krell amps
Tyler, I posted this thread in another OP, but thought I would repeat it here. "I am unsure about getting my Ref 5 upgraded. I'm concerned the SE may be way out of balance with the rest of my system. Alternatively, if I was to drop the bucks of an...
