Tube amp recommendation for Gallo Reference 3's
I had played with the Dared 300B on mine.... not nough power to do a real good job so I went back to my SMC/MacCormack DNA 0.5 Platinum (but a fun afternoon of listening).
Nordost Red Dawn with SPM
I have the Nordost SPM speaker cables and am currently moving from SPM interconnects to Speltz anti-IC's.
Out of curiosity, where does everyone live?
St. Louis MO
What are we listening for during break in?
Audphile...You ought to hear the other SMC mods... and as much as I don't believe in cable break-in, it did take a while for my SMC mods to show their stuff.
Audio Tweak gone bad...similar experiences?
qdrone,Glad you agree with my listening experience--I was beginning to think I was hearing things.I have tried to do abx testing, but every time I do, I recall that I don't agree with a-b-x testing, so I can't decide if I agree with my results. Th...
What are we listening for during break in?
I'm a "no cable break in" kind of guy too.I understand speakers (there are physical changes in the cones & surrounds).Perhaps, I can understand electronics (manufacturing aids flashing off, cap's fully charging, operating temperature changes.....
Audio Tweak gone bad...similar experiences?
1. make sure the penny doesn't fall and short across your speaker leads2. you gotta use a wheatie (wheat eared pennies don't have that harsh solid state sound)3. only then are you ready to take the tweakies advice above (all of which I agree with....
I'm done Really
this is why my system is entitled "will it never end"...I'm thinking not. Everytime I reach good enough, it moves--just like my cheese. At least buying used through the 'gon tends to keep me even.
Decent audio in terrible room?
1. if you go headphones, I love my old Stax Lambda's ($2-300) with an SET amp (I also have Etymotic Research, but I keep those for plane trips)2. near-field listening can be great (non-earspeaker) if done correctly. You will probably get poorer ba...
The Clever Little Sharp
I prefer tubes (I have a nixie tube clock in my listening room).
Mixing speaker cable for Bass & Treble
I echo 240zracer's comments.I use Nordost SPM's full range on my Gallo Ref. III's and add Wegrezyn Copper Slams (8 awg) for the second voice coil/sub. I was using my Nordosts for both (they are terminated for bi-amp/bi-wire), but for fun threw som...
Preamp impedance mismatch with McCormack DNA2
I'm having great luck with a Supratek Syrah preamp and the SMC Platinum version of the DNA 0.5.Before the Supratek was an ARC LS-7 (also tubes). The amp came into the system unmodifed... I had the Rev. A work done and lived with it a few years and ...
Effect of static on cd players
I'm having a problem with static, but seems like my cdp doesn't mind (so far). I have a wool rug and build up charge like crazy-sometimes I see the spark fly 1/4 inch.I have tried to remember to ground myself... in fact, I ran a ground wire to tou...
Anyone heard of 'Clearview' from Mapleshade??
I had to return a set of their IC's because of interference (60 hz hum). They honored their money back warranty with no problem. (no reflection on their quality... this type of cable is not able to reject RF...)
Question about Gallo Ref III
Jeffreybehr,Thanks for the correction. Of course you are correct.I ran without the second amplifier for almost a year (until the Ref SA was released)--the speaker sounds great that way (just rolls off the sub-40 Hz bass)
