@sdecker FWIW, the CS2.4SE did away with the 1 uF bypasses on the coax feeds, ie, full 14 and 28 uF in single caps rather than 13+1 and 27+1. I am aware of a third-hand report that a 1 uF bypass can have a deleterious effect on SQ (supposedly bett...
Should I buy used Thiel CS5
@georgehifi Yes, I read all of your earlier post. I’m just saying it looks, LOOKS, like there are two ELs on that board. All the yellow caps are probably the custom-for-Thiel polystyrenes. On other models I’m more familiar with these were 1 uF byp...
Should I buy used Thiel CS5
No electrolytic caps, all plastics, last forever (well almost) Holy cow! That's a crazy number of parts! It does *look* like there are 2 ELs at the bottom of the pic, maybe a couple more at the other end? But, yeah, mostly film caps (PPTs and MKP...
Should I buy used Thiel CS5
The CS5 is certainly one of the better Thiels ever, especially regarding bass reproduction (sealed woofer) but, as others have noted, needs a lot of current to drive properly (and quality current is $$$). $3K seems pricey to me for a speaker that ...

@jafant That’s a question for Ayre. My guess is the firmware makes zero difference to the sonics, probably more to do with the display and remote operation. Gary at Ayre will be able to answer your query.

@jafant Curious question! Firmware H, 2017.why do you ask?

Soundstage (NRC lab) measures speakers at 2 m - 79”. Their CS2.4 frequency response looks *much* better than that measured by Stereophile. In fact, the 2.4 has the flattest measured response of any in their database (actually, there is a Magico mo...

I have an a QB-9 that was the "second generation" (first generation only went to 24/96 files, mine could handle 24/192) and had it upgraded to "DSD". I don't hear any hum regardless of how close I get to the unit. I'm also running a stock NUC as a...

@cascadesphil Have you tried the rack on a side wall (maybe with amp on the floor between the speakers) or pulling the speakers more into the room, away from the rack?Could make a difference in imaging.

Relevant thread here from Ayre's Ryan Berry. Sounds like Ayre no longer has a supply of laser assemblies for the C-5 but *does* have them for the DX-5.

I posted a long version answer perhaps a year ago on this thread. Almost *exactly* one year ago (link)
Ayre QB9 Twenty Upgrade
Ayre implements the filters in a Xilinx FPGA, which provides the necessary horsepower. In an e-mail, Hansen told me that, during the development of Ayre's digital products, "We have custom filters whereby we can load whatever coefficients we w...
Ayre QB9 Twenty Upgrade
Filter settings are "Listen" and "Measure". Ayre recommends Listen for listening, Measure if you are a reviewer testing the unit on the bench (the Listen filter has better time-domain performance but rolls off the highs). I'm pretty sure the filte...
