Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
Whomever knows a guy with a real good analogue recorder---even the reasonably priced Revox A77, plus some condenser microphones, arrange for him to make you a recording of live acoustic music, the event at which you will be present. Listen attenti...
Is it ok to not gush over Vanessa Fernadez?...one listener's perspective.
Bill, in the 1980's Ying Tan was a dealer of rare LP's in his little apartment a block off the famous corner of Hollywood & Vine, location of the Capitol Records circular building. I went over to his place a couple of times and bought from him...
How difficult to build your own cables?
Western Electric wire with KLEI RCA's makes for a killer interconnect.
Zeta
fleib, you say "Loved my Zeta arm", past tense. Did it give out on you? The arm is a classic, isn’t it? Nice stiff tube, good bearings, massive, non-resonant design and construction. Medium-to-semi high effective moving mass, great for slightly lo...
Quicksilver preamp 1 channel noise
Hope Mike doesn't get too upset about the changed parts! Some engineers do, Frank Van Alstine and Mike's buddy Roger Modjeski being two such.

dbp24? bdp24, please! The bdp is for black diamond pearl---my favorite vintage drum covering, the 24 for my favorite bass drum size, 24 inch.
Is there somewhere I can check vinyl sound quality?
blueram, one of the must-read sites for all things LP is Analog Planet. It is run by Michael Fremer of Stereophile magazine, and he has been writing about LP’s and the equipment to play them on for decades. He reviews lots of new release reissues,...
Boulder monoblock 2150
Bob, Mozart is great for dining, as is Baroque imo. Music Appreciation, and the Humanities in general, were taught in my Elementary School (I was in the school band in 6th grade), Jr. High (now called Middle School), and High School. When Ronald R...
LONDON Decca, Tzar DST and similar cartridges
exlibris' use of "a revelation" is not hyperbole! The most immediate, present, alive, downright exciting sound I've heard from LP's comes from them being played by a Decca/London. Hearing a direct-to-disc LP played by one provides with as close to...

Hearing an audiophile quality recording can be a thrilling experience, but if the musical content is mediocre (or worse), it can become an empty experience. I keep my "Test LP’s and CD’s" (that’s all I think of them as---Sheffields, etc. But also ...
Best way to Crossover JL Audio F110 into system
hambon---When a capacitor is attached to the input jack of a power amp (typically soldered to the back side of the jack, on the inside of the amp), it creates a high-pass filter which rolls off the signal the amp sees at a rate of 6dB per octave, ...
To monoblock or not to monoblock McIntosh MC275's
Monoblocks are cool in that you can place each amp right behind it’s own speaker, using long balanced interconnects and short speaker cables, the best way to hook things up, feel some people.
Which songs or musical standards have haunted you?
Ooh, I'm intrigued Slaw. Lay it on me!
Greatest song titles..
Dan Hicks: "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away". Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band: "Jazz (Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold)".
EAR 912 impression
For anyone not having $12,000 for the EAR 912, the EAR 868 is pretty much the same pre-amp, but without all the controls and meters. And it's a lot cheaper. Looks better too, with the cool EAR chrome faceplate.
