The Best Cities & States to Find High End Gear Echo in Portland is pretty good, as is Pearl Audio-Video (Magnepan, Ayre, Mac, Linn, Rega, Project, Magico, Dynaudio, REL).
How come only 1 or 2 cartridge makers offer a tune-up after run in? Analog expert Brooks Berdan always broke-in the cartridges he sold and installed on his customers’ arms, not letting them leave his shop "in the box". After running the cartridge for a certain number of hours, the cartridges suspension having been...
The Best Cities & States to Find High End Gear Agreed jafant, Los Angeles in particular. In the late 90's I found a set of 13 ASC tube traps, sizes 9", 11", and 15", in The Recycler for ten bucks apiece!
Tune of the Day Oh man, "Lido Shuffle" has a killer groove played by the great Jeff Porcaro, later drummer in Toto. The song was written by Boz and one of the other future Toto members.
I'll Take "Songs About People" for $200 And I believe "Barbara Ann" had already been a hit for the vocal group The Regents, iirc. Most of the songs on the Party album were hits by other people. Doing Beatles songs, contemporaries of theirs, was not very cool of them!
25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. What does it mean? The thing about "horn bands" is that, since the horn players are full members of the band, it is apparently felt that they must play on every song, whether or not the song benefits from them doing so. Whereas The Beatles in their later years would...
Which songs or musical standards have haunted you? Top this Slaw: One day in 1972 I came home and found my two dogs gone from the yard. I went to the pound (as they used to be called) every day looking for them, but no Reddy or Belle Isle (as in the Dylan song on Self Portrait). I was heartbroken....
Do you admit that you ever enjoyed listening to: The first Bee Gees album is great.
Thorens TD 150 super rebuild A Townshend Rock Elite with a Zeta arm, Ray, which uses the Linn mounting distance. The table came with a pretty thin, stamped steel mounting plate, so I cut an armboard from a slab of 1/4" acrylic. Carbon Fiber would be even better, I imagine.
For a quick good time, blankets... Planar dipole speakers benefit more from diffusion behind them than absorption, assuming they can be 5' or more in front of the wall behind them. That allows them to create the very deep and huge sound stage of which they are capable.
25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. What does it mean? Blood, Sweat, & Tears, and then Chicago (who sprung up in the wake of the success of B,S,&T), were really a Godsend for the guys playing horn in the High School marching band. Historically considered squares/nerds, it was suddenly okay to ...
The Blankets Were Good, But... If what GC sells is Sonex-type foam, beware. Over time it decomposes, leaving a crumbly, sticky mess.
Is this a disgrace to the Industry ? $599?! Nice margin. For that price you can get a real record player, not this toy.
Voltage source vs. current source amplifiers Ralph Karsten (atmasphere) has discussed this subject in depth here. Do a search of the topic, and look for his contributions.
Which pre should I choose? "Warm" I get, but wth does "thick" mean? "Not to (sic) fast sound"? You want a "slow" sounding pre? So, a warm, thick, and slow sounding pre. That should be pretty easy to find, and cheap! |
