Organic, musical and natural sounding speakers up to $12K
Magnepan MG3.7i (magnetic-planar), Sanders Model 10 (electrostatic), but only if you can place them well out into the room (3' minimum, 5' better), firing down the longer dimension of the room.
Getting new Preamp
One tube pre-amp designer who does so for both the consumer and pro markets is Tim de Paravicini. His EAR-Yoshino pre-amps are designed to drive a 600 ohm load, the standard in recording studios. The EAR 868L has four pair of stereo outputs---2 pa...
Great guitar 'breaks" (as opposed to solos).
I loved "Loan Me A Dime" from the first time I heard it, and at that moment also became a Duane Allman fan (he was okay in Derek & The Dominoes too ;-). The first time I saw Boz Scaggs, he was playing rhythm guitar (only) in The Steve Miller B...
alternative music guitar heroes
Evan Johns made some noise in the 80’s, with three albums on Rykodisc (one produced by Gary Tallent of The E Street Band). Before that, Evan-fan Jello Biafra put out one album of him on his Alternative Tentacles label. Evan and Danny Gatton had wo...
Song (or music) you want played at your funeral.
I didn’t intend the mention of funeral or mortality to be taken negatively! While "God Only Knows" brings me to tears, they are tears of joy. Hearing it fills me with love, and closer to God. I consider what comes next as a reprieve from this life...
Degritter brand ultrasonic record cleaner
Congratulations, @prof! I can't see how KLAudio and Audio Desk will be able to sell any more of their machines; the Degritter is clearly superior, and cheaper! If one has the $ and wants a non-DIY ultrasonic cleaner, it is imo the one to get.
Tune of the Day
@slaw, my main attraction to Mary Gauthier is in her honesty, vulnerability, and all-around pathos. I mentioned the turnaround (also called tag ending) she employed in "After You’re Gone" just as evidence of her also having a good understanding of...
alternative music guitar heroes
Make sure to check out, if you haven't already, Danny Gatton and Bill Frisell.
Is Pre-Amp needed
As Ralph Karsten (atmasphere) has numerous times said here, a preamp-less system can work well IF the source component is up to the task of driving the power amp directly. If the source is NOT up to that task, the system may actually sound better ...
Tune of the Day
"After You’re Gone" by Mary Gauthier, on her Filth & Fire album. A new classic, imo. It’s an unfortunate myth that being a good musician automatically makes for a good songwriter. Damn those Beatles ;-) .Dig how Mary goes to the "different" ch...
Whats playing on your system today?
Filth & Fire by Mary Gauthier. Don't despair, late-blooming singer-songwriters! Gurf Morlix---Lucinda Williams' guitarist/harmony singer/bandleader/producer up through and including her break-out Car Wheels On A Gravel Road album---does the sa...
Who is your overall favorite guitarist?
Guitar is obviously the most important instrument in Blues and Rock music. But prior to the mid-60’s, it’s primary function, it’s role in the making of Rock ’n’ Roll (as opposed to Rock), was NOT the playing of a solo. First Clapton and then Beck ...
Ribbon midrange pros and cons
Thanks @rauliruegas for that info. I think I’m one of the few planar loudspeaker lovers who never heard a pair of Apogees. For some reason they didn’t seem to be big on the West Coast; I never saw a pair in any California hi-fi shop, Northern or S...
Ribbon midrange pros and cons
I have a pair of the Magneplanar Tympani T-IVa, which have the great Magnepan ribbon tweeter. I also have the ridiculously-overlooked and under-appreciated (not by all; they got a great review in TAS, and VPI's Harry Weisfeld loves them) Eminent T...
What is the one piece of advice you would give about attending AXPONA?
Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen.
