New versus old top of the line speakers.
I heard the originals many times. They had a VERY forward, brash character, the polar opposite of the Acoustic Research rather recessed/laid back "East Coast" sound. Around the time of the L-100, Infinity came out with their Model 2000A, which had...
What are the top 3 dream speakers you wanna buy next regardless of price?
@tomic601, the fan is the easy part. Getting it to spin at the correct speed in response to frequency is a bit trickier! Then there is the matter of the fan blades spinning around their axis'. Bruce Thigpen is a REAL smart guy.
Degritter brand ultrasonic record cleaner
Damn @reubent, the price has gone up 50% from just six months ago! I posted this not to make the case for ultrasonic cleaning, but for those considering purchasing one of the $4,000 machines (Audio Desk, KLAudio, etc.). Here is a cheaper (even wit...

Oh, and an Eminent Technology TRW-17 Rotary Woofer (for the "real" bottom two octaves---1Hz-20Hz!).
Which is the best audio magazine?
I’ve always liked Dick Olsher, and there’s a lot to like in the writing of Art Dudley. Both are avid music lovers with well-developed listening skills, and also technically-informed. Because of John Atkinson's bench tests, Stereophile is imo indis...

Magneplanar MG30.7, restored Stax F-83 ESL’s, Music Reference ESL’s with dedicated Direct Drive OTL amps.
Your ship just came in! time to buy new gear..?
Add a 10' x 16' x 26' (or so) room with a cement floor onto the house. Folkfreak says that would cost more than $56,000, but his standards are awfully high!
Audio Critic 10 lies>>>>>>>>>>
I found it funny that after Aczels epiphany he dismissed as delusional all claims for component differences he didn’t "believe" in, yet before his epiphany he had "believed" he himself heard those same differences. Was he delusional before his epi...
Music I would succumb to under torture
What makes Pop Country popular is that it is really just Pop music---melodies, chord structure, high-gloss production---with just a hint of Country, via the cynically-calculated and contrived lyrics sung with a deliberately-hick "twang".The Countr...
When the Audio Critic was subjective.
Aczel was just a run-of-the-mill subjective reviewer, certainly no J. Gordon Holt, or even Harry Pearson. I don't recall what lead to his "objective" transformation, but was thereafter an obnoxious jerk. His ethics came into serious question when ...
File Under Misc. Audio Musings--Do any famous/infamous people qualify as audiophiles?
Henry Rollins bought his VTL/Wilson system from Brian Berdan (Audio Element in Pasadena, formerly at Brooks Berdan, Ltd. in nearby Monrovia). I think his table is an SME, but I may be mistaken.
Music I would succumb to under torture
@n80, "Pop" Country drives me out of the room. After being exposed to it even briefly, I need to cleanse my soul by listening to some real Country (referred to as Americana by some, though many so-considered artists are not what I myself consider ...
Who makes great active preamps ? Tube or solid state or hybrid.
Excellent list, @lukaske.
Tight bass sub recommendations
I've accompanied both electric and acoustic basses (with and without a pickup going to an amp), and reproducing an acoustic is a more demanding task that reproducing an electric. Most speakers and subs---and most importantly, rooms!, to one degree...
Best Tonearm Lifter?
At one time Express Machining (the company in San Jose, CA that makes the excellent aftermarket parts for Rega tables and arms) was making a real nice end-of-play tone arm lifter appropriately named The Lift. It was offered in chrome and gold orig...
