Tone Arm board material
@travbrow, is the damping material bright blue in color? If so, it may be EAR C-1002 Isodamp, considered the constrained layer damping standard in the industry (though Geoff Kait disapproves of it). Michael Percy Audio sells C-1002 in varying thic...

I don’t know about Petty, but his guitarist Mike Campbell sure is (not was. The music lives on.). It was Campbell who arranged to have Los Straitjackets (a contemporary instro-band) open for TP & THB when they played the Pacific Amphitheater i...

By the way, the generic name of Delrin is Acetal. There's also a long chemical name for it (abbreviated to POM), but you don't need that.
Magnepan and room size, room placement
@meiatflask, if you choose to go with a planar, take a look at the Eminent Technology LFT-8b, another magnetic-planar loudspeaker. A pair retails for $2499, and home auditions are available. Read the review by Robert Greene in The Absolute Sound t...
Soundstaging and Imaging: The Delusion about The Illusion
Regarding tostadosunidos comments on the topic of the ability of a pair of speakers to reproduce depth:I first heard the effect on the occasion of hearing a true high end system for the first time, a system being delivered and set up by Bill Johns...
Charts & Graphs?
MG, I was first apprised of the amp/speaker impedance interaction when looking for an amplifier for the original Quad ESL, which has an insane impedance curve (from around 1 ohm to 30!). When an amp with a high source impedance is partnered with t...

One other material to consider is a close cousin to acrylic---Delrin. That's a brand name I believe, not the material's generic name. Delrin is the material VPI used for the platters of the HW-19 MK.2-4, Aries 1 (top layer), and TNT (pre-Mk.6) tab...
Charts & Graphs?
It needn’t be one or the other; bench tests can aid the consumer in narrowing his search for, say, a synergistic loudspeaker/amplifier pairing. When a John Atkinson bench test of a power amplifier reveals the amp to have a very high source impedan...

Well ya know Tom, Rockabilly is basically the mix of Jump Blues and Hillbilly. Rosie is awfully good at Rockabilly (and Hillbilly), and without a grounding in Blues that would not be possible. Another singer in Rosie's league is Lou Ann Barton, fr...
Component isolation
Doug Sax had the best method of determining the transparency of any given piece of equipment---the bypass test. He would compare a live feed from his studio with the sound of the same signal passing through the device being evaluated. Any differen...
Component isolation
Good questions and comments Terry. Damping the vibrations in a component, vibrations that the component may potentially add to the signal, is not "dampening (sic) part of the audio signal." Where in hell did THAT idea come from?! This idea that co...
Magnepan and room size, room placement
Agree 100% with tomic601, the extra 2' and 4' make all the difference. A 10 X 10 room is inappropriate for any planar, 12' X 14' about as small as you can go.

@tomcy6, Rosie Flores is wonderful! I have all her stuff, and have seen her live many times, the last time up at Pappy & Harriet's, the roadhouse bar in Pioneertown (not far from Joshua Tree, where Gram Parsons met his maker). She was in the a...
Component isolation
Frank Van Alstine was recommending a paving stone sitting on an under-inflated inner tube as a turntable isolation platform way back in the mid-80’s. I believe the idea was already very old even then, dating back to the 1950’s. The early, WWII-gen...

HUGE influence on many guitarists, ones as good as Bill Frisell (listen to his Guitar In The Space Age album) and even Saint Jimi (his "We’ll never listen to Surf music again" song lyric was said facetiously). Leo Fender created his great Dual Sho...
