Roadrunner reapearance Lew, I too have the PE Eagle PSU and Roadrunner tech running my VPI and Townshend Audio tables (Bill, I’m the fella you made your last Eagle for after you closed up shop, from the parts you had left lying around ;-). But this new DC motor w/ Condo...
Tribute bands or bands/artists making a comeback..any favorites out there?? I saw a really good Eagles tribute band out of Vancouver, B.C. last year: Eagle Eyes. Perfect 3- and 4-part harmonies, excellent musicianship. I'm not a big Eagles fan, but these guys nail it.
What was your first big eye opener with regard to audio? Hearing electrostatic speakers for the first and second time. First time the RTR tweeters in the ESS Transtatic I, the second time the Infinity Servo-Static I.Then it was hearing a direct-to-disk LP played by a Decca cartridge. I don't separate th...
Whats on your turntable tonight? Geez, James, I really AM confused! You’re right, it’s Everyday Records. The store on Sandy Blvd. is pretty junky, like a clearance-price woman’s clothing store. I’ve been there twice, last time on this year’s Record Store Day. At 8 AM they were al...
Magnepan 20.7 and Subs The time/phase issue between speakers and subs has to take into account the nature of the x/o between the two. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order filters all create different phase relationships, both between the drivers within the loudspeaker itself, a...
Roadrunner reapearance Give SOTA a call, I hear they're great to deal with.
What’s really hurting the audio hobby? Audiophiles in L.A. have Audio Elements in Pasadena (Brooks Berdan's son), Brooks Berdan Ltd. (Brooks' widow Sheila now manages the shop, and still has expert repair technician Tom Carione and vacuum tube expert Joe Knight on staff), Optimal Encha...
Roadrunner reapearance Bill of Phoenix Engineering says the mounting hole dimensions of the SOTA DC motor are very, very close to those the Hurst VPI uses, and can be swapped easily. But there is also the matter of electrical conversion, about which I don’t know and mys...
Magnepan 20.7 and Subs Although Elizabeth doesn’t like it when I say this, 3’ away from the wall behind them is insufficient for any planar loudspeaker. 5’ is about the minimum, to create at least a 10ms delay between the front wave and back wave reaching the ear. As Li...
Stylus not tracking and sounds terrible @nolacap, try a set of the Townshend Audio Seismic Pods (Size "B") under your Aries. If you remove the VPI cone feet, they will fit right in place of them. They have adjustable top caps for leveling the table. The Pods provide real isolation, unli...
Whats on your turntable tonight? James---Howdy, neighbor! I’m actually in Vancouver, but come into Portland frequently. In L.A. I had Amoeba on Sunset Blvd., an incredible record store. Music Millennium’s pretty good, no complaints. I was up here briefly at the end of 2009/beginn...
Whats on your turntable tonight? Ah, Music Direct is selling the New West label, ay @slaw? Glad to hear it. If you're into collectibles, the Miller's new album is available in an Indi Record Store version: "root beer swirl" colored vinyl! I found it listed on the Music Millennium...
Great Customer Service from Beyerdynamic! Great to hear jond. I have a pair of DT990's with one channel out; I was wondering if they were repairable.
What’s really hurting the audio hobby? Southern California has lots of good hi-fi dealers, and lots of audiophiles. It spoiled me, as did Northern California (another audiophile haven). It’s a different scene here in Portland, and Seattle is quite a drive. It’s okay for me (I have all ...
Roadrunner reapearance @mantistech, go onto the VPI Forum, where there has been some discussion of the SOTA/Phoenix Engineering package. One VPI owner sent his SAMA to SOTA, who installed the new DC motor in place of the stock Hurst, and at a very reasonable price. |
