What’s the best préamp. for the Wavac 805 monoblocks
Art Dudley reported a couple years back in his Stereophile Listening column on the time he spent with the EAR 912 in his system. He loved it. It’s not cheap, but as the owner of a pair of Wavac 805’s, that should not be a problem for you. ;-)
Stuck at home? Make a kit!!
To add to the posts of mc and Duke, make a GR Research sub or four. Rythmik sells the F12G as a factory finished model, and GRR sells it as a DIY kit. The kit includes the Rythmik A370 plate amp and a 12" woofer, which are used together in a servo...
What’s the best préamp. for the Wavac 805 monoblocks
@lukaske, since you own (and presumably like) an EAR Acute CD player, why not consider an EAR pre-amp? Two models: the 868 and 912. Both share the same designer as the Acute, the brilliant Tim de Paravicini.
Happy Scale
The "Well, no one's laughing now" joke is from the movie "Joker".My "happiest" hi-fi moment was hearing the transparency of an ESL loudspeaker for the first time. Everything since then has been incremental.
Subwoofer insight.
Though Rythmik provides high level inputs (on those plate amps I mentioned above), Brian Ding is in favor of low level sub connections. When I learned of high level, my first thought was "Why add power amp distortion to the signal being sent to th...
Preamps with Dual XLR Outputs
Great, thanks fellas. Isn’t education and knowledge a wonderful thing? ;-) This kind of information was regularly included in reviews in Audio Magazine (except those of TAS alumni Anthony Cordesman), and Stereophile when Gordon Holt and Dick Olshe...
Preamps with Dual XLR Outputs
Hmm Ralph, that's interesting. The EAR pre's don't have an XLR/s-e switch, yet have multiples of both outputs (double of each on the 868). I'll have to look for a schematic to see what's what.
Subwoofer insight.
For those in agreement with Larry about the superiority of a high level connection for a sub, know that Rythmik provides both line level connection (on RCA jacks) AND high level (on binding posts) on the company's PEQ and PEQ3 plate amps.Rythmik d...
what's your opinion on the magazine 'stereo review'??
I share @roberjerman's high opinion of the four publications he named, as well as Art Dudley's Listener magazine. Of the newsstand mags, Audio was my fave: a good blend of "objective" and "subjective".
Super tweeter for FullRange Driver
I strongly 2nd @cedargrove's suggestion to watch the GR Research Tech Talk Tuesday video on You Tube, wherein Danny Richie explains and demonstrates all that is involved in adding a tweeter to a single-driver design. You'll be very glad you did!
GR Research NX-Extreme
Oh, I neglected to comment on the 4 ohm version of the GR Research woofer. GR Research offers a 4 ohm woofer, but not for use in open baffle applications, only sealed and ported. The non-ob version has not been optimized for ob use, and the two ar...
GR Research NX-Extreme
Good point about the two different versions of the woofer @oldhvymec. Knowing I was going to build doubles (the 2-woofer version), I got myself the 8 ohm woofers rather than the 16 (the woofers actually measure 14 ohms and 7, I believe). Putting t...
Preamps with Dual XLR Outputs
One exception to atmasphere's comment directly above is a pre-amp using a transformer to create the balanced output(s). That's exactly how Tim de Paravicini does it in his EAR-Yoshino pre's. There is an EAR 868PL (phono and line stages) listed on ...
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
The historically-informed movement has worked it's way forward in time, addressing both Mozart and Beethoven. For anyone who has found Classical music to be boring, listen to it in a "period" performance! In place of the slooow, lethargic, pondero...
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
Right you are, Al. Classical immediately followed Baroque (Renaissance proceeded Baroque, Romantic followed Classical). The early practitioners of "period" Baroque performance (now referred to as historically-informed) were faulted for their lack o...
