Favorite used tonearms under 1000 dollars
Zeta. Roughly 16g effective mass, depending on location of the counterweight, and how many of the cw's internal discs are employed. Very stiff armtube, very good bearings. They don't come up for sale very often (once every couple of years), so one...
Classical music, symphony AND planar speakers
@recluse, being in the southeast, consider looking into the LFT-8b from Eminent Technology, located in Tallahassee Florida. The LFT-8b is, like the Maggies, a magnetic-planar design, at least for much of the bandwidth. A pair of LFT drivers (one a...
Classical music, symphony AND planar speakers
I’m with @frogman. My first audition of the Magneplanar Tympani T-I (three panels per side) in 1973 included Boult’s version of Holst’s The Planets on EMI. Never before had I heard the full depth of the orchestra reproduced: the percussion section...
Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson And The Band
Absolutely, @theo! Muscle Shoals is all about the Fame recording studio owned by Rick Hall. Fame is where Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler brought Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Dusty Springfield, and numerous other artists to record...
Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson And The Band
I saw this at a theater right before the fake-pandemic started ;-), and enjoyed it for what it is. I take issue with a few of the things Robertson said, but that’s to be expected. There is also a movie made about Levon: I Ain’t In It For My Health...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@noromance: Big Jay McNeely---now yer talkin’! Do you have the Honkers & Screamers/Roots Of Rock ’n’ Roll Vol. 6 double LP on Savoy Records? BJM, Lee Allen (Little Richard’s tenor sax man, who was in The Blasters when I saw them back Big Joe T...
During this isolation, I would be interested in suggestions of great movies you like.
A Serious Man is perhaps the most overlooked Coen Brothers films. I wouldn't have understood it nearly as well if I hadn't had a Jewish girlfriend. It is like no other movie you have sever seen, which is true of all theirs.
Eminent Technology LFT 7 !!
@slaw, ain't it the truth! Damn, @gstewtoo's post today has me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning. A lot of info to take in and digest, and then employ.
If you could, what live performances would you enjoy re-living?
I am of an age that allowed me to see some artists & bands live that many of you would loved to have seen and heard, but that now are just not that valued by myself:- Jimi Hendrix at Winterland, ’68 and ’69. First time great, second time tired...

Real good one @r_f_sayles. Wings Of Desire is, amongst other things, one of the most beautiful looking films ever made, breathtakingly so.The Black & White cinematography in the Coen Brothers The Man Who Wasn't There (starring Billy Bob Thornt...
Who are your three favorite female singers?
When I want black, I go with (of course) Aretha, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas. I gotta admit though, Annie Lennox’s vocals on "Would I Lie To You" is about as good as can be expected of a white UK woman ;-) . I love the song; even Blondie drummer C...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@slaw, one of The Secret Sisters' albums was produced by T Bone Burnett, their debut I believe. I would taste that one first (assuming it's available as an LP ;-) .
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@tomic601---Jim, this might interest you: The bassist on the backwaters album---Todd Phillips---and I were in the same band in '71, he leaving just as I was entering. He had decided to learn to play mandolin, and had arranged to study with David G...
If you could, what live performances would you enjoy re-living?
I have a friend who saw The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band live at The Fillmore in ’69. Member Roger Ruskin Spear (how’s that for a name?!) was a sculpturer and electronic tinkerer, and had made a robot in very human form. He brought it along on that USA ...
Anyone Tried Bybee's "Quantum Clarifier"'s Inside Your Speakers?
Jack Bybee just died recently. I doubt anyone is interested in keeping the Quantum Clarifier available. Unless GK? ;-)
