New In 2022
Coming From Light In The Attic Records in November: a 50th Anniversary Edition of Karen Dalton's legendary In My Own Time album.
What I really hate about some music
Excellent points @tylermunns. Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive" still hold up as timeless truths 75 years after having been written and recorded. I learned of singer/songwriter Iris Dement fr...
MoFi controversy
@daveyf: I too have the old MoFi Folk Singer, and have never felt the need to own another version. But Analogue Productions has a 1-LP/33-1/3 RPM version of the album, as well as a 2-LP/45 RPM, and I’ll bet they’re the best of them all. $40 and $6...
Is blasphemous Music ok?
When I was thirty years old I was dating a young woman who, when reaching "that moment" in lovemaking, spoke in tongues. At least that's what her caterwauling sounded like to me. She was a recovering cokehead, and a  ton-o-fun. ;-)
How many plays can you get out of a good record?
I have used Last Record Preservative since it was introduced almost forty years ago. My LP's are still in like-new condition, some of them bought new and now fifty-five years old. I have also always used the best record cleaners available at any g...
Is blasphemous Music ok?
There is a guy who posts amazing videos on YouTube, calling himself The Jazz Shepherd (real name Dan something). In his deep discussions about Jazz music (he is a good friend of Stereophile reviewer Ken Micallef, himself a serious Jazz fiend) he i...
Is blasphemous Music ok?
@hilde45: Like, for instance, politics? ;-)
Owning Up To It
How about unforgettable moment? ;-) In late 1968 I went to see Jeff Beck during his first solo U.S.A. tour (he’d already been over with The Yardbirds), after the release of his great Truth album, which I loved. I also loved his band on that album...
NRBQ live at The Doug Fir Lounge in Portland this Friday (tomorrow)!
Well fellas, it was a HELL of a show! Though Terry Adams is the sole remaining original member (playing electric piano, clavichord, and organ, singing, and banging on various percussion instruments), the band sounded almost exactly the same as th...
Sub Confusion
@jackd: And, all the Rythmik's have what @mike_in_nc wants: a continuously-variable phase control, providing anywhere from 0 degrees of phase "lag" (no delay) to 180 degrees (16 milliseconds of delay, which does electronically what moving your sub...
Best Sound Track Ever Vote for One
Great nomination @tylermunns! A favorite use of music in film of mine is that in Blue Velvet. The score by Angelo Badalamenti is great, but what kills me is how David Lynch uses the music and voice of Roy Orbison is a couple of scenes. One reall...
Sub Confusion
Another company offering subs with high-level hookup capability (the sub taking it’s signal off the power amp’s speaker binding posts) is Rythmik Audio, in their non-XLR plate amps. Those plate amps offer both high-level and line-level (from a pre...
Is blasphemous Music ok?
Perhaps just a matter of semantics, these days it’s not the music which may be blasphemous, but rather the lyrics. But back when the Catholic Church ruled the Western world, the use of the tritone---then referred to as "the Devil’s interval" was ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@sbank and @bslon: The two Kasey Chambers/Shane Nicholson albums are available on LP, on Sugar Hill Records. Good music.
Washington Post article on MoFi vs. Fremer vs. Esposito
Good points @larryi. There is a case to be made that a DSD 256 (or even 64) file made from a master analogue tape is not necessarily in every way inferior to a 1/4" (or even 1/2") 15 IPS (or even 30 IPS) analogue copy. I’ve read reports from well-...
