Nak 480 - worth buying?
I tried in vain to find info on the rs-b85. I'm afraid I can't be of much help on the quality of it, except to say that I have been impressed with the sound quality of some of these technics machines from this vintage. I haven't paid any attention...
Nak 480 - worth buying?
the nak 480 does have adjustable zenith and azimuth. in fact, it uses exactly the same transport as the top of the line 3 heads. the only difference is the head, which is a different head than the playback head in the 3 head models. the thing is, ...
How to deal with a drop ceiling that eats bass?
the easiest way to check is to replace the tile with drywall- cut the drywall the same size as the ceiling tiles. drop ceilings will support this. there are actually ceiling tiles made out of drywall and vinal covering, which is significantly heav...
moving coil vs. moving magnet question
sd is right on about the performance aspects and/or quality, I enjoyed that thourogh responce. I feel that it should be added that both types have different requirements to get the most out of them, much for the same reasons stated above. phono st...
What's the best speaker polisher/cleaner
guitar polish. for black my favorite is gibson. it really brings out the deep hughs. guitar polishes are usually the safest because they don't leave a film like standard furniture polishes.
High-tension power lines and audio
I hyave lived near power lines abnd I feel no evidence of dain bnramage.
New to tubes-how to handle? By the glass or base?
One thing that is important is not to handle the tube while it is hot- this is when they are the most fragile. The longer you let them cool, the better. It is considered proper to handle them by the base whenever possible. As for as rocking goes, ...
Cleaning agents?
The audioquest stuff works good for cleaning really dirty connections, but I think it is more than 10 bones. The xlo wipes are the ones that I have found to make the most audible difference, and the progold seems to be not quite as good. The audio...
Replacing cable from tonearm to phono stage
What about rewiring the arm with cardas or discovery wire to a termination on the tt bnase rather thabn the plinth? or better yet, a single run to the phono amp, provided you can park it close to the table. I just throw these out for consideration...
Ever perform a preamp bypass comparision test?
I meant to say "sources that would seem good candidates for a passive, such as the theta's", but I should add "also from output voltage and what I have read". The theta seems to benifit less from going passive, while my phono, seems to benifit mor...
Ever perform a preamp bypass comparision test?
I have a quicksilver line stage that I have done a simple mod on- I have taken the leads from the tape in jacks and unsoldered them from the tape switch and soldered them in parallel with the output of the attenuator, so I have both an active on o...
My Tubed Amps Entered "Twilight Zone"
My guitar amp did this before and it actually turned out to be a bad tube. While I can't explain it, I would think it would be worth it to try some different tubes before you go through the hassle of sending it in.
Turntable upgrade - worth the effort?
I have not ever had to set up a sota from the ground up, but I have heard them next to other turntables I am familiar with, I have adjusted arms on some, and they are truly good tables. They have very good build quality and they sound good, real g...
Arm resonance and other questions..
That's very perceptive of you to notice that. Whenever I hear a description of a turntable functioning I get excited and giddy. I go into this sort of change, everything else seems not to exist and time stays still. I think it is because with eve...
How do you clean your records?
An audioquest antistatic record brush will go a long way. They are only about 15-20 bucks. Most of what makes a record dirty I have found is playing them with the slightest amount or dust on them. The dirt gets into the grooves from the stylas. Th...
