Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Nandric: God, if such there be, would indeed provide me with timely alerts on available MM carts, because s/he is omnibenevolent. Even if it should increase the asking price for any particular person, God, if such there be, wouldn't care, for...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
A suitably modified version of Plato's concern in the Euthyphro: Is an audio system less distorted/more neutral because I prefer it?; or, Do I prefer an audio system because it's less distorted/more neutral? When Raul (or whoever) asserts that he ...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Kudos Jylee: your LSA looks fantastic.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Nandric: in the past 5 months, I've bought 5 decent mm carts for an average of less than $200 each. That is to say, bargains still exist but one has to be quick. My most recent acquisition is the Shure ML 140HE: cart was $35 and a NOS stylus ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Yes, Lew, it's definitely a Sony tonearm. The vintage knob has pictures of both the 2250 and 2251 and the arm on the 2250 is the one I have, even though I have a 2251. I suspect you're right and the arm was too heavy with the Empire. I played arou...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Frogman: nice description of the two carts. I don't have the audio vocabulary or conceptual sophistication to articulate what I'm hearing. But some of how you described the Azden is how I would describe the Empire. Particularly the bit about samen...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dgob: yes, your story helped a lot ;-). Lewm: I don't know the identity of the tonearm, since I'm still using a borrowed TT and the little research I've done has produced little. The other thorn at my side.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Not for the fainthearted, inebriated or twitchy--or, heaven forbid, any of those in combination. The cart had a muddy bottom end that drove me crazy, and it was deficient in dynamics. I would switch between Empire and the Azden or the AT 20SS and ...

How does one mourn the needless and mindless destruction of a not-even-broken-in stylus for the Empire D4000iii? Good thing I didn't like it that much, but I did want to try it out on my newly acquired epa 100 mkii tonearm before rendering final j...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
I have a combined $2.5k sunk into my components between transport and speakers (ex-cables) and I think I'm done. Beat that price/performance ratio!I accept the challenge: Allnic h1200 phono stage>LSA>Music Reference rm10, bought for total $...
Pre/Amp/Int for Vandersteen 2ce Sig II for +/-$3k
Lightspeed passive preamp + Music Reference rm10 II = a winning combo with those speakers. You don't state what your room size is but mine is 16x23 and there's no volume or clipping problem. Check out the monster sized Lightspeed thread for details.
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
As I understood the manual, any armboard will do. Part of it will be drilled onto the pod and the part with the larger hole where the tonearm mounts into would protrude beyond the dimensions of the pod itself. So, this would be different than Ct05...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
As the guide says - the key is getting your tonearm base on the plate. What do your tonearms arms sit on now? Are they attached directly to the plinth or on a separate plate that attaches to the plinth.Assuming that this is directed at me, the act...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
An alternative to DIY or a mass manufacturer is locating a local machinist who can do the work. That's what I did. The machinist marks the middle ground between the other two options. My guy didn't charge me much more than the DIY option and mine ...
A Copernican View of the Turntable System
A 9" arm can work but some acrobatics need to take place. IIRC, part of my pod needs to be directly below the sp10's skirt in order for it to work. Dgob: I was the one who wanted to try an AT 616 underneath my pod. It was just a thought since I ha...
