Meridian Digital Speakers with Normal Preamp
Meridian speakers allow for direct connection with 2.0 "stereo", but require a Meridian processor for true 5.1 "surround". It's not complicated, but Meridian has their own way of handling processing. ;)
MHDT Havana vs Apogee Mini DAC ?
Mingles has it down, but there is an issue. If you want to have more control over metadata and tags, it's easier to do it before you "import".
Upgrade amp. or speakers first?
Speakers first.
MHDT Havana vs Apogee Mini DAC ?
@Timrhu: Don't let it become a chore. Just feed them as you want to listen, and take it one day at a time. Hope your adventure goes well.
MHDT Havana vs Apogee Mini DAC ?
Again, I agree with Trebejo. I find that optical sounds best most the time. I realize this goes against what a lot of "audiophiles" think, but when using a Mac, optical works extremely well.
Which DAC prevails in this chain of converters?
I agree with Trebejo. He has more patience than I do. ;)
Class D amps w/ digital inputs?
Are you assuming that "Class D" is "digital? "Class D" is an analog design and application. Tact uses DACs, as well as some custom DSP programming, so it's more than just a "digital amp".The Bel Canto S300i has digital input options.
Which DAC prevails in this chain of converters?
Only YOU can make that decision. Try it both ways, and see what YOU prefer.
MHDT Havana vs Apogee Mini DAC ?
I don't recommend against FireWire, but I think using it as your main reason for choosing a DAC is too limiting. I've used the Apogee and it's good.
Good DIY suggestions?

DAC/Cable box connection
Is your cable box set to "PCM" or "stereo"? If your cable box is sending a Dolby Digital signal, then it will cause the DAC to make strange noises.
tekton design 6.5t
Tekton makes some good speakers. You should also take a look at Omega speakers.
PC audio with S/pdif input only
The Hagerman HagUSB is a great converter and one that I recommend.Note: You'll need to connect the HagUSB directly to your Mac. The AirPort Express has an USB port, but it does not transmit audio. It's used as a print server for USB printers.
PC audio with S/pdif input only
It looks like your player/DAC only has coaxial. The APE doesn't have a coaxial output, so you would need a coaxial-to-optical adaptor, which I don't care too much for. I recommend staying away from adaptors if you can.You might want to have a look...
PC audio with S/pdif input only
Does your DAC have a toslink optical input? It seems like all you need is an Apple AirPort Express (APE). The APE has an optical digital output, which means that you'll need a "mini toslink" cable. Since you use an iMac, iTunes and AirPort Extreme,...
