Townshend Springs under Speakers Does promotion of brand name products, e.g., Townshend Springs qualify as “spam,” and shouldn’t such posts be removed by the moderator.
So where should the tubes be? I have 37 tubes in my system (including 8 in the electronic crossover). The only place where solid state amplification is more apprpriate than tube amplification is in the plate amps of the subwoofers
What is wrong with my system? Compared to putting in a new major component, such as an amp or preamp, it is relatively easier and less expensive to swap out fuses, interconnects and speaker cables but these latter changes yield little, if any, improvement in SQ.
What is wrong with my system? Several writers have suggested substituting a vacuum tube preamp. I would recommend a device based on the 6SN7 such as one of the superb Cary units or Roy Mottram’s Vacuum Tube Audio SP14, which is an excellent bargain.

What is wrong with my system? If I’m not mistaken, this is all Class AB Solid State. IMO, your SQ will not be warm & musical until you go to tubes and/or to Class D-GAN. Tweaking the stuff you have won’t get you there. Cables will have no influence.
The first system you had that was "high end/audiophile", by you standards Bought the above turntable & preamp from HiFi Buys when Underwood Wally was working there!

Peeking inside a Carver Crimson 275 Tube Amplifier I have a great Bob Carver system. My Magnepan 1.6 QR have bypassed factory crossovers. They are bi-amped by a pair of Carver 350 monoblocks (woofers) and one Carver 275 (tweeters) using a Marchand vacuum tube electronic crossover. The preamp is...
So damn hard deciding which tube preamp to buy! In my experience, tube preamps definitely sound better than solid state preamps and the circuits based on 6SN7 sound better than those based on 12 pin miniatures. I won’t mention any brand names because I’ve discovered that, when I do, my comment...

Before I order the Magnepan 1.7s... I’ve had Magneplanars, one model or another, for 40 years now. I’ve tried other speakers but I always come back to the Maggies. Audition them! Some of the modifications, suggested, above, are in order. I have completely discarded the factory c...

My New Magnepan 1.7i's sound dull and lifeless on the top end...why? You’ve had these Magnepans for 5 days. (I’ve been listening to Magnepans, almost exclusively for 40 years.). What speakers were you listening to before the Manepans? Could it be that you (your ears/brain) had become used to unnaturally bright tw... |
