I still have my border patrol from 3 years or more ago...still sounds fine to me. New stuff is different, not necessarily better.

The Naim 5si is only 1999 new. It has a great headphone section. No phono preamp, just 4 line levels. It may go well with the lintons. However, I would recommend using naim nac a5 speaker cables, as it is a bit picky and you'll get the most out of...

Border patrol with the tube in the power supply section.. wonderful sound and the tube can be turned on or off.   
Help with cartridge wire clips
Ortofon headshells are known for this, possibly because their headshells are designed for their own cartridges.  I had issues trying to install a Hana into one. Ended up breaking a clip. I solved the issue by removing the leads and replacing them ... 
Passion, or ..... Precision?
They generally recorded that stuff to be played loud, otherwise it sounds like crap mostly. I own all those old rock records, I hardly listen to them now. I'm more into jazz and classical, also old hill Billy music, acoustic...  
Casual listening
Low level listening can be rewarding, if your speakers perform well at low volumes.
