the best use Subwoofer for under 1500
You will not find a cleaner sounding sub than the Velodynes. I have a F1500 and it is excellent. Servo-controlled for ultra-low distortion. Do not use the internal filters, though. They are not high-quality.Some have complained about lack of impac...

Preamp recommendation pre amp
I have had some experience with ML 38, 38S and 380S. They are all wonderful preamps. Highly recommended. The 38 series seems to do well with the stock power cord.As for your cables, leanness usually indicates a problem with the speaker cables. If ...
Single brand vs. multiple brand ICs and ACs
It really depends on the cable company whether you will be sucessful with a full complement of their cables. Many companies use similar constructions for both their speaker cables and their IC's. This is an indicator that one of these is probably ...
shielded cables & IC's or not?
Shielded speaker cables are a bad idea IMO. Shielding only adds unneccesary capacitance. With the low output impedance of power amps, there is really not much concern of RFI being picked-up.As for IC's, this is system and location dependent. The g...
What causes "cupped hands"?
Your placement sounds unusual. Usually in a rectangular room, the (box) speakers are about 2 feet from the back wall, with the listening position around mid-room, which would be around 10 feet away from the speakers. In order to get the optimum im...
What causes "cupped hands"?
May be non-linear phase response or cable reflections/electrical resonance. This can be caused by cables, particularly long ones. Lossy cables can cause general musical soup as well, particularly in the high-frequencies. This effect was obvious in...
interconnect suggests under 300 used.
With all ML equipment, you should stick with the balanced connections. They always sound better.
Biwire / Speaker / Amp Combo Question
The brightness is probably just musical soup in the high-frequencies. Once these are in focus, the perceived brightness will go away. I would try different CD players first and then replace your IC's with better ones (low-capacitance). I recommend...
Side Surround Speaker Cable Advise Please?
If you are handy, you can make an outstanding SS cable using Belden 9309 or 9315 from alliedelec.comAbout $70 for 100 feet. It will blow-away anything commercial up to $400-$500.
DIY interconnects
Check out Jon's IC recipes at:http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/index2.htmSilver is better IMO, so that is all I use for IC's. Air dielectric with no insulation is also superior.
cables 101? The brands and differant sounds?
Sean - Dunlavy's patent describes an 18-twisted-pair cable I believe. The inner 7 pairs are cabled or twisted and then the next layer of pairs is twisted around the first group in the opposite direction. This way the fields from pair to pair inter...
Information on Empirical Audio IC cables
I think most of these folks post on audioasylum.com, but someone may notice.
Twisted or Straight?
This is really the way to do it. It keeps the grounds pretty much at the same potential and the lengths of each conductor about the same. Ground-loops is the biggest concern when running multiple circuits.
