Ground loop b/w amp and phono stage The most common problem when this shows up is a but in the arm wiring, FWIW.
Active FETs vs. Step-up phono stage designs Hadn't really thought about that! We make two... it might be interesting to take a poll.
Is there a list of cartridge capacitance? I'd be interested to see what you think!
What makes music so congested? Philjolet, did you hear the British or American press? I never found the US press to my liking but the UK is great.
Stylus Drag The fact that a platter slows when the stylus is in the groove is not the same as what as referred to as stylus drag. That is how I define stylus drag. What else would it be??
Active FETs vs. Step-up phono stage designs Dan_ed got that right...Its been my experience that you don't want semiconductors at the input of a phono stage- they just don't have the same low level detail as an all-tube phono section. I don't like transformers for the same reason- they limit...
Is there a list of cartridge capacitance? Input the resistance and inductance for your cart, and input capacitance values to see what the resonant frequency is. I think anything above 20 KHz is fine, so capacitance values up to that resonant frequency should be OK. Yikes! When you are dea...
Analytical or Musical Which way to go? David12, the Wilsons are voiced by listening too. If you have them on the right gear they are quite musical, also very revealing. But put them on the wrong gear and they can sound the way you describe. In speakers its really important to see what t...
What makes music so congested? See if you find a British original LP of that and see if you still say the same thing (Atlantic 'Plum' label). The mix is OK FWIW, though its not going to be as spacious as many jazz LPs, its pretty standard fare for the period. Its not likely IMO...
Stylus Drag You don't hear the change in pitch as such. You hear it as a shaky soundstage. Speed variation causes the tonearm to decrease and increase skating forces. This makes the soundstage less solid. This is why speed stability is so important.
Turntable speed accuracy Dover, it has been sitting for some decades, I suspect. The trust bearings are interesting. They are a set of polished platforms that reside beneath the platter. The drive shaft comes through the center and has nothing to do with them!
Analytical or Musical Which way to go? To say that the wrong measurements have been made for decades would be to take the easy way out. It might be far more appropriate to say that in the absence of the "right" measurement, too much emphasis has been placed on the "wrong" measurement.I...
Looking for the BASS Hi Paul, I try to stay away from anything that increases the complexity of the signal path. If a subwoofer can be done without messing with that, that is how I would do it. Usually you have troubles getting subwoofers to match up with the rest of ...
Cary SLP-05 Output Capacitor Question You can assume that the shunt value Jeffreybehr mentions to be around 1Mohm, if you can't find it. This is used to prevent the output cap from having a charge on it that could damage an amplifier input. That would make your total driving impedance ...
Turntable speed accuracy I picked up a Timeline as I was interested in how our Scully Lathe was doing while cutting lacquers. The Scully uses a 1/8 horsepower Bodine AC synchronous motor, driving a transmission that then drives the platter via a drive shaft. With the cutter... |
