Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
Ralph: And the absence of a wiring photo should implicate an audio designer as not having pride in his construction quality? No! - just a missed opportunity IMO.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
And yes, point-to-point soldering results is “messier” wiring presentations than the corresponding PCB soldered wiring. If one wants aesthetics of what’s presented under the hood but never seen, then buy an all-PCB component. It does not matter...
What in your mind represents real technological advancement.
Reduction of breakups in loudspeaker drivers has been one advancement of the technology in the last 20-30 years. This makes a driver smoother and more detailed as there is less distortion.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
Through researching and corresponding with others on various boards I came to think the 6SN7 was the tube I wanted as the centerpiece of whatever I bought. Its an excellent tube- and nearly every preamp that uses it has gotten good reviews. This ...
Question About Audio Research Preamp Specs
I do not understand technically why a particular preamp may have a greater capability to drive a low impedance amplifier. While, I try to follow these types of discussions, something basic is lacking in my current understanding as well as how it ...
What is the best Reel To Reel machine ever built?
Atmasphere, since you have some very good R2R's have you ever tried to contact a major orchestra like say the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the worlds greatest to capture them on tape?  I am sure the records would sell as audiophiles know who the...
Reel to reel
I have a first gen copy from the master tape of Talking Heads "True Stories" album. Honest, it is the genuine article. I also have the vinyl lp, the CD and a HIGH Def 96/24 download. With my system I can play all 4 versions at the same time. I can...
Quad ESL 63 In Another League Now
In this hobby, we are always learning something, and the big lesson I keep learning is always try something, even when some may say it will not make a difference, such as power cords cannot impact the Quads, well they do so try it. The bottom e...
Dual vs single sub
Stereo bass? Vinyl mixes bass to a single channel for practical reasons. Moreover, localization of low bass is a non issue as you can't really tell where its coming from, only the higher harmonics is a clue, AND most music only have one bass in...
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
Both are noted for excellent sound. But internal photos tell a story too. Between the two the Sachs is hands down the winner. Don shows the internals on his website. Google 'Supratek internal photos' for views of the other. Is there a particular rea...
Question About Audio Research Preamp Specs
Take that with a grain of salt. I do prefer direct coupling (no cap), best cap is no cap mentality. But dsper OP one of the best tube preamps hailed even by many tube and solid state preamp manufactures as being the best tube preamp ever made ...
Amp or speaker issue?
Sounds like the voice coil is OK, so it might be a simple matter of replacing the surround and or regluing the spider. Here in the Twin Cities area, there is an outfit called Midwest Speaker reconing that has been doing work like that for the last ...
Reel to reel
"There is always a loss when copying from one analog source to another." That’s false. This statement is false. There is a loss of bandwidth and increase in distortion with each additional generation of analog copy.Absolutely nothing is better, inc...
Amp or speaker issue?
Another vote for Erik's assessment. Surround failure on woofers is a common problem with older loudspeakers. If a foam surround, ten years might be as long as it holds up.
Turntable platter problem
Try cleaning the speed controls and speed selector switch. If dirty or corroded, the speed can become variable or even stop. If that does not sort it out you have a lot bigger fish to fry- a servo problem or related electronic issue such as the po...
