Talk me out of buying Monoblocks and into a stereo amp instead
@dman777 'Warmth' and detail do not have to be a tradeoff.
Cary SLP 98 users, past and present, are there any left?
I think that now we are getting into the difference between absolute phase and relative phase @billpete @decooney @immatthewj 50% of all recordings are inverted relative to absolute polarity. So its not important to have the speakers inverted. ...
F-XLR to M-RCA recommendations
@snowdog57 Going from a balanced source to RCA can be tricky. The thing to understand is balanced and single-ended are mutually incompatible, so you have to jump through some hoops. If just using a cable you can’t just use an adapter or cable wi...
Question for Atma-sphere, will expensive power cables improve your amplifiers?
would it be safe for me to summarise that you are of belief the primary and perhaps even only issue of the effect of a power cable on sound has to do with voltage drop across the cable and little else? @kevn No. Bandwidth makes a difference too...
Vinyl sounds better (shots fired)
vinyl is highly processed in order to keep many issues at bay. and interestingly enough many people like the sound of that. @stealthdeburgo This statement is false. Vinyl often gets some processing (such as mono bass for a few milliseconds at a...
Tube amp for Sourcepoint 8?
If this speaker is used with tube amplifiers, the significantly higher impedance in the treble compared with that in the midrange will tilt up the high frequencies. @soix This is a good example of how Stereophile comments are not always correct...
Why do tube amps often subjectively sound more powerful than SS ?
I had demonstrated to me by my friend Murray Zeligman and David Berning that full loop negative feed back was deleterious to linearity(a Berning amp with variable feedback and as the feedback was reduced to zero what I heard sounded better to me)...
Question for Atma-sphere, will expensive power cables improve your amplifiers?
@westcoastaudiophile Yup! What you are describing is beyond most audiophiles. Many of them have a DVM though and it can show that there's something going on...
Question for Atma-sphere, will expensive power cables improve your amplifiers?
@westcoastaudiophile Usually the power transformer is one of the most expensive parts in any amp, unless SMPSs are used. Its very difficult to measure the RLC (especially the R) on a lot of power cords (you need a really good meter), but its fair...
Why do tube amps often subjectively sound more powerful than SS ?
Actually you don't need a degree to design tube amps. @dynamiclinearity That is certainly true. But it helps, especially if the amp in question has a feedback loop. Designing a good feedback loop is a bit less trivial if you want to get it righ...
Question for Atma-sphere, will expensive power cables improve your amplifiers?
claiming as thicker than 100ft house wiring 3ft PC will tangibly affect sound is not justified!  @westcoastaudiophile As I explained earlier the wiring in the walls is far higher performance than most power cords so Voltage drops in it are less...
Speaking of phono, line preamp and driver tubes, how close a match do we want ?
@inna If the circuit is balanced differential you probably want the balance between internal sections of the tube. Check with the manufacturer on that one. 7% can be easy to meet depending on the tube otherwise. This will matter a lot less if the...
Need to learn about Audio Research
Class D is attractive, but of the ones I've heard were thin and edgy. @traudio That can happen if the power supply for the class D is under-built. FWIW there are class D amps now that challenge the best tube amps for smoothness and detail witho...
Vinyl sounds better (shots fired)
Vynil introduces a level of distortion that is pleasing to the ears of many, whereas other people prefer otherwise. @squared80 Actually vinyl has extremely low distortion- much lower than any of the 'tests' show. The reason is because of how mu...
Spatial Audio Raven Preamp
@lynn_olson  Or a well-known American manufacturer that omitted, or forgot, the required 10~100 uF decoupling/stabilization capacitors for the multiple 3-pin voltage regulators, so they sang happily in the 10 MHz range. I've seen preamps and a...
