PayPal versus C2it
I might check out the C2it service. I've stopped using paypal on eveything except computer purchases on Agora forum at arstechnica.com. Too many sellers expect the buyer to cover the 2.9% paypal fee for CC. Technically an ethical buyer shouldn't d...
Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III or B&W 802?
This is a little old, but I heard Von Schweikert VR-4 GenIII setup last weekend. I listened to it for maybe an hour. The Vons were being driven by some classe gear. The music was very dark and full on orchestral stuff. It could be described as bei...
Monster Cable Kicks Butt?
I had bad luck with the monster twist bananas. The AR ones weren't any better. Even the "piercing" twist-lock one never gave nearly as "solid" of a connection as crimped on spade lugs, or bare wire on the binding posts. The difference was clearly ...
What exactly do ya do about a 15 foot run ?
Nah. All those additional coupling connections (extension cords) wouldn't be good, even if they were hi-end. I had a 18 foot run to the AC mains from my rack. And for a while (about 6 months) I ran two of those wireworld power strips ($15 ea @ aud...
Improvised equipment stand
You owe it to yourself to read old posts from an A'gon member called 'Caterham1700'. Read his posts from the following thread. He gives a decent DIY recipe than betters the "Flexy" design for minimal cost. http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?h...
Buy a hi-end CD player/transport now?
Sure the modded DI/O owns its price point. It's probably good for someone who wants something better (outboard D/A) but doesn't want to shell out too much for it at this time. So it is a viable solution.
More expensive receiver vs. cheaper one with amp
I, too, would go with the inexpenive receiver as a pre/pro, and add a quality outboard multichannel power amp. Yeah the preamp sections of many receivers aren't the best, but I think the power amp portion of most receivers is the limiting factor i...
Buy a hi-end CD player/transport now?
Regarding the modded ART DI/O...From what I've been lead to believe over at the AudioAsylum forums is that the modded DI/O is an absolute STEAL for the money invested, but it's no giant killer. I've never seem anyone stack it up against digital fr...
Speakers for small listening room
I have floorstanders in room similar in size to your room. My room is only 16x12x8 feet. My floorstanders are Eosone RSF-600 dipoles (not exactly audiophile grade, but they work for now). I have them along the 16foot wall, about 23 inches out firi...
Adcom - A Good Value?? Auctions risky??
If $$$ was a concern I would take the B&K Reference amp over the Adcom, most any day. I just heard a B&K Reference 2220 (2x220wpc) and was pretty impressed for the money. I'd rather have it than the monster adcom, unless I was driving a st...
Is this the norm?
I see this problem with BOTH buyers AND sellers on audiogon. Maybe I'm used to different trading systems in other online communties. Too often I see buyers calling "first dibs" but never follow through. But the converse is also true (and one I fin...
Do CD-R's play on your player? If no, why not?
FWIW, My Marantz CC-47 plays CD-Rs just fine. Never an issue with me. I've used both el-cheapo $0.10 USD blanks and expensive stuff without issue. Maybe I've just been lucky? The Marantz CC-47 is a 5 disc carousel, BTW. And as others have mentione...
Do CD-R's play on your player? If no, why not?
Sometimes it is a reflectivity issue. CD-Rs are only 70% as reflective (on average, not sure where I got his number) as regular CDs. CD-RWs are even worse as they are only 30% as reflective as regular CDs. Some transport optics just can't deal wit...
which direction do this cable go?
If the cable has a arrow, that arrow is usually included only for convenience. (Arrow points from source to loudspeaker). It's merely a suggestion in all but THE most esoteric designs. Generally once a cable is broken-in in one direction, it needs...
my girlfriend & I tried over 10 diff positions
kelly: while listening, its always better with music in the background, lol. Having the music playing while moving speakers only made my point all the more dramatic. In fact in moving the speaker back into place the negative cable had wiggled lose ...
