Inexpensive preamps look too good to be true?
Forget about 5 years, what about 5 months from now? The Pacific Valve stuff has a 90 day warranty, the eBay stuff doesn't indicate any warranty at all. If you can fix them yourself, or are going to mod them and void the warranty anyway, or conside...
Zu on Zu
In the NY Times this morning was an article about Netflix, and it contained this quote from Reed Hastings, the Netflix CEO:"At the heart of any good investment, I tell investors, is a contrarian thesis that they and the company believe very deeply...

VR-1 or Onix Reference 1??
I was looking to move up from the Epos ELS-3 and listened to the Onix Ref 1 in a friend's system. I wanted to get away from the slight harshness of the Epos tweeter, especially at low volumes. The Onix was only a marginal improvement, especially s...
Best music store online or off?
There are some very cool independent releases here:www.woodstockcd.comI was at Princeton Record Exchange maybe a month ago, and while I agree with Sbank that it, and most used record stores, aren't as good as they used to be, it's still pretty fab...
Do tube dampers improve sound?
Once again I have to make my plug for trying the inexpensive solution first. I got 50 industrial grade silicone o-rings from here:http://www.marcorubber.com/material_selection.htmfor $10 plus shipping. I have a preamp with all octal tubes, so the ...
What do you wish for?
I can't speak to the first two, but the last definitely won't happen. DVD burners sell in the millions of units, while Creek and Bryston sell in the thousands. The economies of scale aren't even close.
"Dumb" Laptops Link to High End Media Center?
CWlondon,Your proposal is certainly one solution, but I'm not sure any "best practices" protocols have been established. I use exactly the setup you describe, but only because I'm a computer professional and have access to cheap old laptops. I use...
tonearm cable
Zu Cable regularly auctions their Xaus tonearm cable on eBay starting at $150. If you catch the auction right, you can buy one pretty cheap - I got mine at $150 as the only bidder. They'll terminate it any way you want; mine is RCA-RCA and sounds ...
Anybody with some thoughts on Hafler amps
I agree with Avguygeorge; I left my DH-200 powered up 24/7. If I turned it off it was hours before it sounded good again. It didn't draw much power at idle. With a little modding it sounded great and served me well. David Hafler was a pretty smart...

Vinyl question
Demand is not as strong as you think it is. New releases these days rarely do pressings bigger than a couple thousand. Reissues can be higher, but only for proven sellers like Dark Side of the Moon. It's the low demand that forces prices for new v...
Remastered My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
Received my copy today. Far more energy at both frequency extremes than the LP, which I would expect since CDs don't have to cope with the RIAA curve. However, the vocals seemed to stay at about the same level, so they get kind of buried in the mi...
can i transport apple lossless between pc & mac?
If the machines are networked all the disk format issues go away as the networking software handles all that. I think Wkraft was talking about connecting the external USB drive directly to both a Mac and a PC for backup purposes. If that's the cas...
can i transport apple lossless between pc & mac?
It's not about the file format, it's about the disk format. The default format in Windows XP is NTFS, and OSX (10.3 or 10.4) will only read NTFS, not write to it. The default format in OSX is HFS Plus, which WinXP won't read or write. Both WinXP a...
