Music Hall CD25, Onix XCD-88, Rega Planet; Others?
Autre,You might call AV123 and see if they have any B stock XCD-88/99s. That's how I got my 88 - it was never listed on their Web site. Their B stock stuff comes with full warranty. Good luck.
Recommendations for this combo: Epos,Denon,SVS
I agree with Rar1. I was running the ELS-3s with an old NAD 7140 and the amp section was definitely not up to the task. When I added a modded Hafler DH-200 the Epos' really opened up. I don't have any experience with modern receivers, so I can't r...
Furthest reception from your tuner and how?
Bio,I'm also a former Eugenean, now in Florence. I lived in Ferry Street Bridge and Whiteaker and never got any Portland stations, but when I moved into the South Hills facing north I could get a few, not listenable though. I knew a guy who lived ...
Music Hall CD25, Onix XCD-88, Rega Planet; Others?
Autre, like you I owned the GCD-575. Last year, after many moves, the transport finally gave out. I listened to the Rega and loved it, but it was also in a much higher end system than I owned, and even the used ones were more than I wanted to spen...
Record Clamp?????
In a world with perfectly flat records and platters with no resonance, clamps and mats probably wouldn't be necessary and, as Dougdeacon points out, might even be counterproductive. On both my Music Hall MMF-2.1 and my Thorens TD 150 the platters ...
What TT upgrade from tweaked Thorens TD160
Here's a suspension alternative:http://www.theanalogdept.com/spring_alternatives.htmI did this to my TD 150 and it worked quite well. It eliminated the footfall problem and provided at least as much "magic" as the springs. It also made balancing m...
Record Clamp?????
I also recommend the Michell record clamp - it's inexpensive, works great, and is light enough to be benign on suspended decks. Michael at Britaudio.com always has them, and there are some eBay vendors too.
Best Russian Tubes to Import
Punkuk,Be careful with the Russian "military" tubes. I bought some "military" 6H8Cs (same as 6SN7) and they were clearly identical to the current Sovtek 6SN7s, and sounded just as bad. YMMV.
Audiophile Electrocution
Mdhoover,That's sounds pretty much like the description my doctor gave me. I'm definitely in the hypothyroid phase now. Thank goodness thyroid hormone replacement drugs are common now and relatively cheap.Too bad my original shock was AC - if it w...
Audiophile Electrocution
Drubin,Yes, I'm quite sure the shock changed my metabolism. Up until that point it seemed quite normal; after the shock, definitely revved up, and stayed that way for years. My doctor said he studied cases in med school where people where people ha...

Long term effects? When I was 13 I belonged to an Explorer Post, an adjunct of the Boy Scouts. Our sponsor was a local company that built closed-circuit television systems, and after hours we could go into their shop and use their machine tools, eq...
Zu on Zu
Bartokfan,I suggest you read the 6moons article as linked in Aktchi's post above. Perhaps the Zu's "ideal" match is something other than an SET amp....For all the Zu owners here: what's the most power you've run through your Zus in your home, and ...
Need Recommendation of PC speakers
Swan M200s:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836136102For classical and jazz they would be hard to beat; from 100 hz up they're terrific. If you're a rocker or a gamer, they don't have the deep bass. I'm thinking of buying a pai...
Inexpensive preamps look too good to be true?
Forget about 5 years, what about 5 months from now? The Pacific Valve stuff has a 90 day warranty, the eBay stuff doesn't indicate any warranty at all. If you can fix them yourself, or are going to mod them and void the warranty anyway, or conside...
