D'agostino amplifiers: where's the beef?
Lastly, of course it boils down to whether you can afford the equipment in the first place. So is it first or last?
Replacing driver screws with brass screws
In my humble opinion cd318's post are on one the money.  My contribution to this storm in a teacup is this: 'De Minimis'. That is shortcut legalese for 'The law does not take account of small things'.  I have done the brass screw thing.  Did it ch...
What has been your costliest mistake in this hobby?
My biggest mistake was getting a 'high end' tonearm from Origin Live.  $ Thousands!  It is not better than the standard Technics tonearm on an SL1200.  Origin Live  talk the talk but they do not walk the walk.  The latest version of their conquero...
Honest question about cartridge vs. turntable performance.
As an owner of three turntables (all direct drive) I consider the merits are approx:Turntable 35%Cartridge 35%Phono 20%Tonearm 10%But these merits are for performance.  There is an overwhelming argument to put your money into the turntable.  It is...
Magico A3
Since my earlier post I have purchased the A3s.  Quality wise they are a solid choice.  Decent highs, excellent mids.  Tight bass.  My only complaint is that while the bass quality is there - the bass quantity is a little lacking.  Partly ameliora...
What do/did you do for a living?
erik_squiresI bring madness to the chaos.I know it sounds easy, but let me tell you, it’s a lot of detail work to pull it off day after day. If you have the passion it is easy to get started, but takes a lifetime to master. The thread is 'What d...
Looking for phono preamp suggestions
You must consider something in the Allnic line.  LCR networks are the way to go.
Best DAC for around $2,500 or less
I have had Oppo 105 and Oppo 205 used as DACs.  Also Had Wyred DAC2 v2.  Better than all of those is the Matrix Audio X-Sabre    https://matrix-digi.com/en/products/318.html  They are good enough for a friend's TAD References.  Although an apples ...
Just confused
Hi.  Good luck!  This is a difficult question.  Unfortunately in this forum every man and his dog has 'expert advice.'  Best wishes from New Zealand.
Add an external DAC. Make my Oppo UDP-205 a true top player
dcaudioIt would be difficult to improve upon the 205.  I have one and it is approx equal to my W4S Dac (latest model- but sold).  It is however behind the Matrix Audio X-Sabre Pro that I now have. All three of these run the latest ESS chip.  As a ...
Phono for Ikeda 9TT LOMC
A bit late in the play, but anyway ... I have a 9TT and I struggled to get a phono stage.  Eventually, more out of luck than anything else, I hit on the LCR network type phonos.  So I sought out a Vida or an Allnic.  I currently run an Allnic 1500...
These seem a bit pricey $$$
I think it is a good review.  Speakers that look plain need to be reviewed even more - if you judged by looks alone you would buy Spendor A4s.  One thing that good speakers do is to image well and that was Steve's first focus.  Would I buy them?  ...
Speakers that can reveal orchestral instruments' positions
This is a subject close to my heart.  I obsess about soundstage.  My first point is a bit annoying but I have to say the source and the amplifiction are contributors.  As for speakers: in my opinion they contribute the most.  Here is my 'Profound ...
I need advice for power cords
Dude, these are the basics. 1.  You need sufficient gauge. 2. Good quality termination (ie strong set-screw contact).  3 Decent materials.  Copper or silver (don't get distracted by 'nines' or other snake oil).  4.  They really should be flexible....
Tempo Electric 4N Silver Speaker Cables
A few years ago I bought silver wire from Tempo and 'rolled my own'.  It was on a par with Oyaide 910 silver interconnects.  Probably as much to the uber rca plugs I used.
