Analyzing DACs
This thread is getting sidetracked a bit but thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. The reliance on measurements is as old as this hobby. Back in the 1960's Julian Hirsch was editor of THE major Hifi magazine at the time, Stereo Review and he was o...
Warm and accurate bookshelves that can handle volume
Well so many suggestions. I would likely steer you towards something of greater size. Either a floor standing speaker or large bookshelf like the KLH 5. Your listening space is pretty large so I think something quite small will struggle to fill yo...
David Crosby R.I.P.
Played Cowboy Movie from If I could only Remember my Name as loud as I could last night.  So good!  Besides his music, he was a very intelligent and witty speaker.
Interesting situation! Do we need this....
I have never heard the Fluance speakers but have no doubt that they sound better than what the OP expected, given the cost. We often have a preconceived notion of what something should sound like based on what it costs. Realistically, the 2 way s...
Why is so much music recorded out of key?
Interesting comments. @designsfx Doesn't make sense to me to tune down a quarter tone for the vocalist as a quarter tone difference shouldn't be that hard for a vocalist to deal with ,even at the top or bottom of their ranges. Also this phenomena...
Want to add vinyl to my system.
Vinyl is fun for some people. They love the fussing, the cleaning, the hunting through bins of records.....the ritual. If that’s what you want out of vinyl, go for it. However, consider buying used so if it doesn’t meet your expectations, you can...
Vinyl - One Word - WOW!!
@dogberry  Love it!
Vinyl - One Word - WOW!!
"Old" vinyl, pressed before the digital era,  when that vinyl was made from the analog master tape sounded great. I have several friends with 1000s of records bought in the 60s, 70s, kept in pristine condition. Most sound wonderful. Current vinyl...
Vinyl - One Word - WOW!!
WOW I stopped listening to vinyl because it didn't sound too good, I got tired of changing the steel needle and cranking the arm to wind the motor after every song LOL! The OP, according to previous and current posts, is using a basic, 15 year o...
Phono Cartridge Purchase from Asia?
I actually moved from a Hana SL to a Benz Micro Wood that I bought from Kron. Cartridge arrived quickly and was in perfect condition. I found it to be a significant upgrade to the Hana which I thought pretty decent but not up to the hype. I have ...
Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps
With over 50 years in this hobby, I have had more pleasure with the tube gear I have owned than the solid state .... so that must mean something. A couple of points worth mentioning though. #1 Tube watts seem to drive speakers better than SS watt...
Solid state to tube
+1 on the Quicksilvers. I have the mid mono monoblocks. They are wonderful and have no problem driving my 90db efficient KLH 5s to fairly high listening levels. They also worked very well with some Snell Towers I had before. I find they have ple...
To preamp or not to preamp. That is the question.
@holmz  I don't do my critical listening on this second system. It's not in my bedroom but in my living room. My critical listening is with my primary system in a dedicated room in my basement. So it, as it stands, is "good enough" but I will hap...
To preamp or not to preamp. That is the question.
Thanks for that soix. I'll keep my eye out for something like that. Being in Canada I'd like to try to source something up here to avoid high shipping, duty, taxes etc.
To preamp or not to preamp. That is the question.
Budget is around $1000. I don't mind buying used, prefer it in fact.
