Importance of phase and timing optimization when incorporating sub woofers ?
I'm just going to get a subwoofer I can afford and play with the adjustments available until I'm happy with the integration. If I can't get happy, I'll unload the sub and stick with my two speakers. Poverty has its advantages-some things are just ...
All the brands I don't like...
He said neither. That was rsf507.
Why are Trolls not blocked
A lot of people get accused of trolling at some point. The internet would be a ghost town if everyone did that.
Your first system and your journey...
My first actual stereo was in my 20s. Tandberg stack (3xxx something) of tuner pre amp and amplifier, Yamaha PX-2 turntable, Nakamichi ZX9 cassette deck, a 3bx(?) dynamic range expander and a pair of A/D/S L1530 speakers. Then life happened. Kids,...
Life is too short to buy someone else's favorite stereo gear
This is one of those rare times I'm going to agree with a sweeping generalization in regard to audio gear. Whatever some may suspect of OP's motive, he nailed a basic truth.
Cataloging Question
Go to the Library Of Congress' website and see how they catalog their albums? (Probably cross referenced six ways to Sunday). That way if you forget where something is you'll at least have a reference to help you sort it out. And yes, I have been ...
Diminishing Returns
If you get some spare time, or become bored, you can always drop in and share what you've learned with the new guys. I'm sure you have a lot of valuable input and experience that could help less experienced folks get to where you are faster. Just ...
What is the most FUN pair of speakers you've ever had and why?
A/D/S/ L1530. I wish I could find and afford a mint pair again. Soundstage was magnificent and they had that magic combination of detailed but forgiving. Second place is my Paradigm Studio 60s. Detailed, but so forgiving.
Are most recordings so bad it's not worth spending large on speakers?
A lot of "modern music" does sound exactly the way it's supposed to for the intended audience. Overly compressed and played through cheap earbuds. Reproducing some of the studio sound accurately isn't possible because there were no musicians or st...
Do any of these interest you at all? (If you had the money)(Which I don't)
They missed the Von Schweikert Ultra 11, and I think they're under $300,000. That would be my choice.
Class A 30 Watt Amps: Are they enough to drive my book shelfs?
I believe John Atkinson (Stereophile) measured the Pass Labs 25 watt amp at 80+ watts in to 8 ohms, and 130 watts in to 4 ohms.. The amp in question should have no problem with the KEFs.
vintage versus modern speakers
My A/D/S L1530 speakers were amazing, and would still be great speakers today. Very good audio gear tends to be just that-very good. "Technology" may have advanced, but probably a lot more than actual improvement in sound quality over the best "vi...
Class D vs Class AB - Looking for best used budget amplifier for Magnepan MG12
To clarify, Class D amps are not "digital". They are analog with fast switching power (the digital part). As the new kid on the technology block, it will have the least refinement and I have yet to hear a cheap Class D that sounds like anything ot...
What is your favorite budget audio component?
My favorite budget amp is currently the Cambridge Audio Topaz AM5 and it was a steal at $100 on sale. Very musical, more detail than $200 should buy (regular price), good construction. The sonic character is similar to my Marantz PM 7200.
How many shipments can audio equipment survive?
This question is why I save all my boxes/packing materials for gear (audio and computer). Then I double box with styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap if I need to move or ship anything. It's a pain storing the stuff but it's worth the effort every tim...
