Nude Turntable Project A thought just occurred. Has anyone tried a DD TT with a plinth but with the arms mounted on external pods? Comparing that configuration to the same TT nude might shed light on the effect that a plinth has on the TT versus the effect on the tonearm.
FAVORITE LP'S OF 2011 Here are two that caught my eye in a thrift shop box and then my ears:Gershwin Live - Michael Tilson Thomas and Sarah VaughnThe Peacocks - Stan Getz Presents Jimmie RowlesBoth have excellent music recorded and pressed beautifully.
Nude Turntable Project I added a second arm to my JVC QL10 (TT101 and JVC QA7045 arm and solid particle board/wood plinth) using a bracket of my design screwed solidly into the plinth, and a Micro-Seiki AX-6G arm-board. As you may know the arm-board attaches to a post o...
Grounded Power Cord for Turntable - why not?? As both the phono pre and the cd player were previously floated on the power supply side and now are grounded on that side and floated on the device side I am pleased to report a clearly audible improvement. Best 15 minutes I've invested in this s...
Grounded Power Cord for Turntable - why not?? I reversed the float on my phono-pre, didn't have much time to listen but George Shearing never sounded better. Now on to the cd player...Jim, I understand your concern and we are in accord. But as a matter of course I always float the ground on a...
Grounded Power Cord for Turntable - why not?? I understand the concern on creating a ground loop and in fact I have floated the ground on my other sources; but I never thought to float it at the device side. I will now go through my PC's and see if the shielding is grounded and float the iec ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? I have my TT101 in its original plinth up on Aurios (similar to roller blocks) which are attached via a blob of clay to tip-toes which sit on brass cups. I don't have room for a second tonearm in the back but if I did, I would go for that free sta...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Halcro, having opened up the bearing on the tt101 I would say that it was engineered for the load it supports. I would not say it is particularly stout or overly robust if you get my meaning. So, yes you are living dangerously with a very heavy ma...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? What is the theory of a heavy copper mat? I can see adding to the flywheel effect, but that isn't how most dd turntables including the 101 work. I can see it as a EMI shield, but the TI material is probably better as it was designed for that purpo...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Aren't cliche's just peachy.
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Wahwah, I recently found out that the Luxman PD-444 (made by Micro-Seiki) used a slotless/coreless motor. So MS apparently used both?Lewm, I thought some more about it and tried a new test: I lowered the stylus directly on the Achromat platter mat...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Lewm, I am mostly playing my high compliance mm carts at this time and the UA7045 is not compatible. I think the 7045 is excellent and would recommend it and by extension the 12" 7082. Also Jim Howard did an excellent job on the EPA100 so it reall...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Lewm,EMI it is. I can only hear the vibration using the stethoscope pressed against the plinth or top plate, not through the speakers. It is faint, not audible with naked ears (at least mine). It doesn't change with a reversal of the plug. What re...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Lewm, my thinking is that the vibrating transformer adds to the general hash of noise we live in and that the stylus needs to decode. So, even though I don't hear it specifically, it can't be making things better. Also, the EMF generated by the tr...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously? Halcro,I'm glad to hear that someone else is crazy enough to buy a stethescope and go looking for trouble. I hadn't thought of it but you are right that the tech should have noticed that the transformer is humming. The motor now is beautifully sil... |
