Comparison of latest DAC chips
Since this thread's about the latest chips, is anyone else keeping an eye open for implementations of the DAC11001a? Its a new R2R chip from TI- I never imagined there'd be a market for such as they no so long ago discontinued the PCM1704 with no ...
Comparison of latest DAC chips
@georgehifi : which Exasound DAC is R2R? I've never seen one, they're all ESS.
Can anyone explain in laymans terms why your gear sound better after warm up
My guess is its mostly about electrolytic capacitors. They're the staple on power supplies and they have equivalent series resistance (ESR) which is fairly temperature sensitive. Higher temperatures lower the ESR, improving the effectiveness of th...
Transformer coupled vs Capacitor coupled?
Transformer-based volume control in a pre-amp is probably the best sounding kind. Implementation is king though. Transformers on inputs/outputs bring system-wide benefits in terms of isolation from common-mode noise that capacitors cannot give.
new GAN amplifier
Are they really great mates? If so then Thorsten would do well to bury himself in Bruno's technical papers in relation to classD and ask his buddy pertinent questions when he gets stuck.
new GAN amplifier
Thorsten Loesch particularly shows his lack of knowledge. Agreed - its obvious he conflates 'clock rate' with 'symbol rate'. Its not the clock rate of the classD amp which is around 500kHz, rather the symbol rate. There's no clock rate in fact...
new GAN amplifier
@georgehifi  not much going on over there recently is there?

atdavid516 posts11-25-2019 11:00amNote that MOSFETs don't have secondary break-down effects, hence EPDR is not nearly as critical for FET output stages. They don't mind high instantaneous power. When did you last look at a MOSFET SoA plot? Its ...
Can an IC based amp be considered 'high end'?
Going back to the early 90's IC amps had a pretty bad rep for SQ. Then National brought out the LM3886 which contributed significantly to IC amps becoming 'respectable'. So I think given the correct implementation, IC based amps can be 'high end'....
Do we really need anything greater than 24/96? Opinions?
No we don't. 20/88 would be more than sufficient. 16/44.1 when played on the right DAC still sounds awesome.
Good CDTransport (player) without DAC?
Cayin Mini-CD - affordable in the extreme, tray-less front loader and uses external PSU so upgrade is easy.http://https//item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.39.534e6fbcvKbTaA&id=541797941560&ns=1&abbucket=1#detail
Analog Devices vs. ESS Technology
What @roberjerman said. The implementation usually matters much more than the chip itself. With that as a given though, some chips are easier to implement than others and ESS are amongst the most difficult - most sensitive to PSU quality for one t...
Why a separate DAC?
An external DAC might be an upgrade or it might not. I'd recommend choosing an external DAC with a multibit (sometimes called R2R) chip and substantial power supplies, preferably one free of opamps in the audio chain.
Unfiltered NOS DACs sound
Yes, I hang out on DIYA a lot. You're welcome, happy to share interesting results from these amazingly good value chips!'Wild' sound could be it yeah, more 'refined' with the filter in place. I've tried running NOS and 2X OS, could barely hear the...
Unfiltered NOS DACs sound
I also use a DIY TDA1387 DAC but my findings are rather different from yours @suix6. I've found analog filters improve the sound - best if the filter comes prior to the I/V stage. Could be I'm using different filters - LC (passive) ones. The improv...
