Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
The Chip based are less expensive. Indeed - its possible to get the flavour of R2R at a very low price - try for example Lite DAC-AH, which goes for under $200. Its using the same chip (but 8X as many) as the Border Patrol but the PSU is le...
Schiit CD Transport on the way soon.
I heard its going to have a USB output - a very neat innovation!
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
When you pass the very significant ultrasonic content of a typical unfiltered or lightly filtered NOS DAC through a non linear system which all audio systems are especially at ultrasonic frequencies and with tubes, that aliases into the audible ...
What's your definition of an audiophile?
If your system cost more than your music collection I'd say you're an audiophile.
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
It matters not one iota what I think a thing is. Aliasing is what happens when an ADC digitizes a signal with frequencies beyond half its sample rate. Aliasing has nothing to do with DACs its entirely an ADC phenomenon.Took a look at the IEEE link...
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
NOS DACs are not accurate. They used to have wicked phase issues due to the analog filters now they just have wicked aliased harmonics. I'd just like to point out that this is hopelessly inaccurate. The OOB (out of band) signals from a NOS DA...
Downside to R2R Ladder DACs?
@georgehifi Its not a drop-in for normal opamps because its CFB. I get better results using a passive filter before my opamps than I did with AD811 and no filter. AD829 is doing very nicely as I/V for me at present, preceded by a filter.
Downside to R2R Ladder DACs?
@georgehifi these days I wouldn't use a 'naked' opamp in I/V without prior filtering unless it was a pure video part (AD811 for example).
Downside to R2R Ladder DACs?
Assuming the R2R DACs were built with genuine fine tolerance resistors this is utter nonsense.
the sound of massed violins in classical orchestral recordings
I found massed violins a problem until I changed to a multibit DAC. Similarly with choirs, changing the DAC (and later, the amp) fixed that up.My guess is @6119 try an external multibit (R2R) DAC with your CD player, assuming it has digital out.
DAC upgrade suggestion
If you want one Dac to enjoy music for a while, rather than churning through experiments, get an Ayre Codex.R2R DACs are ridiculous - no two resisters are the same in the real world Ironic given that the resistors on-chip in the ESS DAC in the ...
What are the DACs that use good circuits in the Audio sections?
Discrete R2R DACs even in the absence of DAC chips still use logic chips. What's the problem with "chips"?
Upsampling and the FR of a DAC
If we upsample from Redbook (44.1/16) do we still get the 96 kHz frequency plot as a result? If so, couldn't this alone be a possible reason why some hear a difference in upsampling and some do not? Yes, and yes. But are SR (slow rolloff) filter...
Which good discrete R2R multibit DAC & why NOS ?
What is the difference between a discrete R2R & non discete R2R DAC ? A discrete R2R uses individual (discrete) close tolerance resistors in the R2R ladder. The non-discrete uses an IC with those resistors on the die of the IC where they're...
Linear Power supplies for DACs...?
The noise issue with switching supplies is primarily common-mode. Fitting a common-mode filter on the DC feed to a DAC would be sub-optimal, its best position is on the mains side. Anyone got example DACs with CM filters on their power inputs?
